Couple questions about rebuild.
 

Hey guys, my buddy is doing a TII swap and I got his old motor off him because I've been wanting to rebuild one for a while. It's a bit of a frakenrotor though. It came out of an 88 and judging by the 5th/6th ports and intake it's an S4 motor. However it's got an S5 front plate on it. The OMP is electric and the PO had it hooked up but it obviously wasn't doing anything because it couldn't be plugged in. It also took an S5 water pump not an S4.

So, my question is, when I do this rebuild should I try to get an S4 front plate for it or will it be fine with the S5? I'm not going to run an OMP anyway. And if I do use the S5 am I going to need to let RA or whoever I get the kit from know it's a S5 plate or are the seals/ gaskets mostly the same?

You'd be better off finding the proper components for whatever chassis you are putting the engine into.

That being said, the s4 wp housing is better since you can use a stock metal thermostat cover. The seals are the same regardless, so no issue there. The gaskets will be different depending on series though and the o-ring situation for the front cover as well. S5 has a plastic ring that should not be used on an s4.

Thanks for the info. I don't even know what I want to put it into yet. I just really want to rebuild one. I'll probably buy an fc shell or maybe an 86 shell to throw it in. I guess I'll see if I can find an s4 front plate locally. Living close to Miami it shouldn't be to hard :lol:

Why do you need a new front plate?

So that all the gaskets and everything will match and I don't have to worry about getting the wrong stuff. And wouldn't I be better off with a motor that is all the same series?
