Corksport PS Header into RB Presilencer, will it work?
For clarifications, it's on an 88 N/A GXL, 5-speed, as my name implies.
I have been looking at a whole new exhaust for my GXL and originally was going to just go with the RB streetable header + presilencer into an Apex'i N1 dual catback. However, just last night I stumbled across the Corksport PS header and noticed that it was 304ss, and I know from my old '00 N/A Regal that SS is great on exhaust parts. So I was just wondering if the Corksport PS header would bolt onto the RB presilencer or if there was something else because I don't want to just run a race pipe into the Apex'i catback and have it that loud. Edit: Was just reading through some threads and read about the OBX SS header, but I'm not exactly sure how that bolts up and how I could get that to run with the Apex'i and still have 6 port. |
The RB presilencer is just slightly longer than the stock cat, so for everything to fit nicely you'd need the RB header or something the same length as the cat.. [18" cat 20" RB presilencer if I remember correctly..]
As for the stainless steel.. You don't have to worry about the RB parts holding up, they're super durable. |
I can vouch for RB durability. I have a street race header by them that the guy who gave it to me said he got it in 1994. its still in GREAT shape. a little discolored but its not rusting or falling apart.
|
I wasn't meaning SS is better in durability over RBs mild steel, mainly because I'm still stock right now, I just meant that I know SS is great for flow as it keeps the heat in better than mild steel does.
Is there any way to get the CS or OBX SS headers on somehow, that does not involve welding preferably? Or is there some other SS header that I haven't came across yet that might work? I could do the electric 6 port I came across on Rotary Resurrection, I was only mentioning the RB presilencer because I hear these motors are pretty loud without them, or would the N1 duals be enough to quiet it down to a reasonable level? |
Okay, so I've been digging through old posts and I've read that the OBX header is a SS clone of the pacesetter and that it should bolt up to the main cat. Does this sound like it would all fit properly?
So, for clarification, has anybody used the pacesetter with a high flow cat and some cat back? If so, how's the sound and install go? Edit: I was looking at Rx7.com and saw their bolt on Bonez cat but it says turbo on it and was wondering if that would work. Here's the site, but I can't link to the specific part, it's about 2/3rds down the page. |
header is going to be real loud no matter what's behind it.
|
I assumed that, I just don't want basically a straight pipe exhaust sound with no mufflers or anything. I've heard some parts are louder than others, but that is with a, pretty much, one brand exhaust setup. I know I'm mixing and matching and I expect it to be loud, but I don't want to be pulled over every two blocks or so, you know?
|
Dang edit button disappearing, I think I get what your saying walken, I was meaning would the Bonez bolt on cat from Rx7.com bolt up to the OBX header even though the cat is under the turbo section? Basically, is a bolt on turbo cat the same as a bolt on na cat, bolt pattern-wise? Like the RB street header/Bonez cat towards the top of that page.

Pacesetter header to y pipe is 17 and 3/4 inch.
|
I don't know measurements for anything so that doesn't help much. But, thanks for the info marclong.
|
Sounds near as makes no difference about the size of the NA cat..
So you could email them and ask how long the cat is. The Racing Beat mild steel is very thick - So probably equivalent to thinner SS piping.. |
Marclong, just to clarify, were you meaning the length between the outlet of the header to the inlet of the catback/y pipe?
|
Yes, external dimensions flange to flange. I just welded up a universal RB presilencer and it needed to be exactly 17.75 inches to fit from my 12 year old monza header ( which is still in great shape by the way) to my new RB catback that I bought from Slickwillie. Not sure about the OBX header though. New exhaust is night and day from gutted cat with stock mufflers. Sound great. Quiet at idle, deep and loud when you want it to be.
|
|
I like monza/pacesetter headers. last one I ordered off ebay the holes were crooked. bolts right up to a corksport/motoria midpipe and any catback. RB REV2 would be the best.
This time I'm going to do a pacersetter to a 3" borla xr-1 for a midpipe and a custom y-pipe to dual 3" magnaflows. probably cherrybombs on the Ys. gonna be super quiet, but flowing enough that the header will be replaced with a downpipe when I turbo swap. |
Okay, so I found a Catco cat on summit that I think should work, only problem is that it is 17.5". Do you guys think that I can get 1/4" of sway from the catback to get it to bolt up?
Edit: Just realized it's a 2.25" in/out cat, and I think the header and catback are 2.5"... this is no bueno. |
Yes

I went to put on a rb catback I just picked up to replace my horrible hacked up stock Y pipe with crap mufflers combo and it wouldn't fit. The gap from headers to the Y pipe is ~18 inches and I previously had a 20.75 inch presilencer (think it is rb) in there. I wasn't sure why everything didn't bolt up but it looks like my headers are pacesetters (wasn't sure on brand before) and I need a rb header or something to bridge the 18 inch gap. My header sounds like crap, its very tinny and has a ping at idle so I'll probably just get the rb header. |

So ace, was that ~18in from a pacesetter to catback? I'm still trying to figure this out and don't want to buy a header and find out that the only one that will work would be the rb for what I want.

I'm not positive on the brand of the headers I just know they are too long to fit the ~21inch presilencer I have which I'm guessing is rb. |

I know this may be a lil out there, but you wouldn't happen to have a pic of your header for comparison ace626?
I'm no good at exhaust fab, so I'm trying to find a bolt on solution with all the pieces I want... Some saying about sh!t and want comes to mind though. |

I can't find the place on the car that uses the exhaust hangers in the picture (just in front of the mufflers). Car is an S5 auto to manual swap. I think the solution is if you have the rb presilencer that is not universal you need the rb streetable header and that will bolt up to whatever catback you have. |
Both pics would be amazing, but if not something like a pic of it on the car showing where it ends in relation to the underbody, that may not make sense, but kinda like if you were laying under/ to the side the outlet of the header and snapped a pic with a few reference points cuz I've got my auto tech class at my local college today from 12:30 to 5 and have had it on a lift the past few weeks fixing it up since I bought it.
Yea, I'm finding out more and more that I probably won't be able to run a presilencer, but a single cat is worlds better than the three stock I'm guessing tho. I want to be silent-er and/or emissions semi-legal, or else I would probably run a test pipe. |
