corksport 3" downpipe

I have a 87 TII. Its pretty much stock with the exception of a custom ss cat back exhaust a gutted cat and K&N air filter. My boost sucks (2-3 psi) and I'm pretty sure its the precat. I want to replace the precat with a corksport 3" ss downpipe.

I also intend to do a few other mod's - boost controller, fcd or reprogammed fuel/boost mapping.

Does anyone have any experience with this item (corksport 3" DP)? I heard its a direct bolt up to my cat. Also, how well does it perform (increased boost, noise, boost drift, etc)?

Any info. or other recommended "bolt on" 3" downpipes would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how hip you are you are on using racing parts on the street but check out www.thunderfabrications.com . They have a 3" manderel bent DP,(one peice) that runs strait to the cat back.

um....call me a newbie..but is the downpipe for the turbo's only or can it be used on the NAs? thanks

Node 06-27-02 11:13 PM

some people call them downpipes for N/A's, but it is most often referred to Turbos.

Yep, and the ones hes talking about (corksport) is for turbo IIs only. So is the thunderfabrications one.

FC3S Drift 06-27-02 11:56 PM

ahh okay cool...thanks guys

FC3S Drift 06-27-02 11:57 PM

on the NA it is called the midpipe(or race) right?

BoostedRotors 06-28-02 12:01 AM

NA's equivalent is a header.

No, the midpipe is what replaces the main cat. The downpipe is what replaces the precats and comes directly off the turbo/exhaust manifold. The order(from front to rear of car) is downpipe then midpipe, then catback.

FC3S Drift 06-28-02 12:05 AM

the more you know :D cool thanks again

No problem mane ;)

No it isn't. A header mounts to the engine. A downpipe mounts to the exhaust manifolds output opening. Also a header generally has tuned length individual tubes for exhaust pulses, for increased scavaging effect at a collector (if used).

A down pipe on a NA (as mentioned above) replaces the pre-cat(s), but is not nearly as loud as a header as the exhaust manifold absorbs a major amount of noise.

BoostedRotors 06-28-02 12:17 AM

OK OK. I know where both DPs and headers connect. I was referring to the first replacable piece in the exhaust system. You know what I meant. :)

You'll also need a fuel pump, and a S-AFC.

Or you could pass on those, and search for "how to do a motor swap" in a few weeks.

I like that...fewer places for leaks to pop up.

jimmyv13 06-28-02 11:14 AM

Is anyone running the 3" pipe from thunder fabrications? hmmmm...rubs chin, I may have to get that.

yeah well, Maybe I knew what you meant, but I doubt FC3S Drift (and perhaps a few others) knew the difference.

Mine is being made now and is supposed to be here by the end of not next week but the one after that. Mine was $200 altogether shipped with a bung for the O2 sensor and one for my GReddy EGT gauge probe. I can let you know how it comes out.

jimmyv13 06-28-02 07:39 PM

Let me know how loud it is....what muffler will you be running?

Ima be using the stock CB for a while. I want to keep the boost down some till I get some injectors and an s-afc.

The DP listed on the Cork Sport site is pretty dated I guess. They made a new one I saw the other day. They fitted the prototype on a car that I'm buying from one of the owners there. The new DP is 3" ID, not OD. It's a very large pipe. Polished, stainless, mandrel like the cat-back. Going to be right around $200 from what I hear. Also they will be making a new mid-pipe too I guess.

It has not yet been run on a car, just fitted. That car is getting the turbo swaped now and painted before I buy it. But I can tell you guys about the pipe once I get the car in my hands. Sound and what not. I will not really have a before and after on it so I won't really know what the power difference will feel like.

You also lose about 10-12lbs going to a DP. :)

jimmyv13 07-01-02 01:17 PM

I found this company in another thread that makes a 3" mandrel bent pipe that goes from turbo to catback for $175. I've emailed them with a bunch of questions about it. I'll let you know what I find out about it.

I think you meant www.thunderfabrications.com right? If so thats the one I am waiting on getting here. They are putting in a bung for the probe for my EGT gauge too.

Shit, yeah that's what I meant, sorry for the confusion. Thanks ROD.

OK, I got some feedback from thunderfabrications. Here are the email replys.
