coolant leak freeze/ expantion plug leakiin
 

yes i searched. and i saw lots of"rear " leaks that were the housings leaking i think. well heres what my ordeal is. I stoped friday nit to grab smokes and some gas in the 91 vert. as im fueling i catch a glmps of a growing river of green cominout n front of the pass front wheel. so i pop the hood and have a lite steam but cant se the leak... so i ended up towing it home. and with a hose stuck in the koyo i found my leak.. its a freeze plug on the front plate right by the CAS. I hope i can get this thingswaped out without pullin the car half apart. In all my years of wrenching ive never had a bad freeze plug. and its not like a normal? leak its more like its got a rust hole in the center and is just shooting hot cooland uito the rad. so anybody have a plug fail not due to popin out a plug? im gonna try to get a pic .... other thing iswhat type of new plug ive seen steel, brass and 1 thats rubber in the center wit ha washer on both ends and a nut and bolt. u tighter it up and ot smashes the rubber and it gets fat and seals. the only thing is this is like an inch thick and im not sure if it wouls even fit in it

I wouldn't use a rubber plug, I'll use those for intake plugs, but when there are liquids involved...

yes it happens but not commonly, it means your cooling system has been severely neglected.

the plug is 30mm and some auto parts stores may carry it, or the mazda dealer or order one online.

brass is preferrable.


edit: pffft i checked mazdatrix. don't ask me why they wouldn't put it in the cooling system section..

i've seen it too, although maybe once? Mazda or mazdatrix can get it, it will be special order though, just because they don't fail often, and nobody replaces them when the engine is rebuilt like a piston engine

checker auto part or now o riellys has a large asortment of them i would say 30 mm sounds right never had it happen with a 7 but once on a 6.9 diesel ford ended up useing a brass expansion plug and it has worked for a few years now its basically a three piece brass deal that you stick in the hole and tighten a bolt to expand taking th old one out should be easy tap through with a screwdriver twist with pliers to "cut" the old plug in half then it should pop out clean your cooling system out very well then install with a socket that fits just inside the new plug make sure to tap it in just right and dont hurt your block for hells sake ! oh they sell a slide hammer tool as well but i find the socket to be easiest ! good luck !
