Convertible Top issue

Hello,

My searches have not answered my specific problem.

90 Vert.

My top will close, but not open.

When pushing the close button on the switch, it beeps and does its thing correctly.

When I push to open button, nothing happens, no beeping, no movement.

I tried another switch I have from a previous donor car and it did the same thing. The fuse is also fine.

I looked for the 6-pin connector on the pass. side shock tower that Icemark has mentioned to use for jumpering and testing, but I cannot even find that connector on mine.

Could it be the motors are shot?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
ck

well if you can't find the diagnostic connector, then you will need to check the outputs at the back of the switch.

I have a 90 vert and same thing happened to me. For me, the wires on the switch itself were soldered poorly. They came loose, and I resoldered, now works perfect. Just an idea. Trying another switch and same response, probably not both bad, but who knows. Good luck.

Icemark, is it a green connector?

croffeyc 07-20-05 07:49 AM

Also, pardon my ingorance, but how to I check the outputs at the back of the switch?

My electrical know-how is a bit dim.

Thanks.

I had the opposite problem, open no problem but wouldn't close. Local shop said the controller on the pass side motor was faulty. Rather than screw with it I used it as the excuse to rip it all out and go manual.

If you diagnose the problem I kept my parts, switch and both motors. If you need something PM me.

Good luck.

Today the switch worked fine. I assume this means it's going bad since it works intermittently?

Icemark, I found the test connector. Even though the switch worked I decided to test the connector anyway.

When I jumpered the open and close, inside the car I heard 4 beeps with the final being a long beep. Does this mean everything is OK or should the top have actually moved?

Thanks in advance again.

If the vert motor is out, ca it be opened and closed manually? or do you need the motor

I had a similar problem, It turns out there was alot of corosion on the connector. I ussualy had problems after I washed the car or left the top down and dew set in the car. I have the electrical diagram if it helps check my site here is at dirrect link.

No its a white/clear one... 6 pins 4 wires, right next to the boost/pressure sensor underhood on the passengers shock tower.

I have the same problem too!

My roof doesnt open from time to time, but always closes. I checked the switch. The problem is not there. I did a simple test: I shut down the motor and done the procedure with the battery only. When I try to open the roof and it doesnt opens, I here a "click" at the passenger's roof motor. Sometime from Monday I am gonna open the back and try to find out what relay does me "tricks" behind there...

I also checked the fuses etc and they are ok. Some relay or circuit needs care back to the roof motors= a pain in the a$$... :)

Thanks, Icemark. I found it. It was laying low. Funny what a flashlight can help you find.

Anyway, my question now is when I jumper the wires to open and close, the top doesn't open or close, I just get 3 short beeps followed by a long beep.

Is this correct or does it indicate another problem?

topaz 07-23-05 06:29 AM

The short beeps are normal. The long beep means that the top should already reached from full open to full closed and vis versa. :)

It sounds ok, dont worry. :D

sounds like the motor position switch is bad.

Remember the parking brake must be on!

croffeyc 07-23-05 12:56 PM

The parking brake was engaged.

Is the motor position switch in the motor itself?

Thanks,
ck
