Convertible Regulator Removal & Replacement Sources

My window gets cocked going up / down and I need to remove the glass to replace the rollers and the regulator to grease and clean the cables. In the FSM (Page S-48) it says you need to remove the quarter glass?? Is this true? Also....

1) Any tips to regulator removal? This is what I planned on doing:
a. Mark all the bolts with a sharprie as installed
b. Remove the window stops and pull out the window
c. Remove regulator and guide bolts and remove everything
Anything else?

2) Looking ahead any recommended reliable sources for rebuild units??? I see write-ups but prefer having a professional company do this.

Thanks.....

I have redone both of my vert regulators. I never took out the quarter window, it's not necessary.

The failure point is the nylon cable slide at the top of the vert regulators. Eventually the cable wears through it and the cable drops. Your description sounds as if this has already happened since the window is cocked up. If you let this go on, the cable will fray and break. Now you have the additional difficulty of replacing and rewinding the cable in the drive drum.

The oem design is poor in terms of durability. The manual window regulator shares much in common with the vert type. It has a pulley in place of the slide. Both of my regulators have pulley's replacing the slide and will never need another touch. This is the best way to permanently repair the issue.

I do not believe that anyone makes replacements or rebuilds for the vert. You are on your own.

Good Luck.

Jack

Thanks for your input. I did get the window and guide out but ran out of daylight for the regulator. You are right the quarter window does not have to come out when removing the window, but it was not easy and required giggling to pull out. All the nylon rollers are GONE so I plan to stack nylon washers on the roller pins and reinstall. I'll look at the regulator nylon cable slide now that you mention it is the trouble point.

Check out McMaster-Carr. They have many different kinds of plastic and non-ferrous bushings. Look for something you can modify or change to suit your needs. Check their plastic pulleys too. I'm sure you can do better than a stack of plastic washers from a hardware store. They's have everything .... Teflon, delrin, whatever.

I didn't find the removal process that funny, but I guess if you reached the point where you were slap-happy...

Hopefully you don't need to disassemble & re-wind the spool attached to the motor, that can get frustrating

I have a passenger side regulator from a '91 vert sitting on my shelf, let me know if you need it or pics for any kind of reference.

I think I fixed it but thanks I'll keep in mind in case my fix does not last long. Window goes up and down now. I removed the regulator and guide rail and all the rollers were missing. I bought some nylon rollers and sleeves and made rollers and for time time being is working ok. The single roller on the regulator rail I drilled out the rivot and made a roller and secured it with a button head bolt. I put some pictures in case anyone needs to replace the rollers. Thanks for the inputs
