Computer question

first of all, wuts the difference between the ECU and the computer? Second, the computer, i guess, that is under the carpet on the passenger side, will one from an 86gxl be an ok upgrade from my 87 n/a? please help, im lost. thanks

Rotorific Nov 14, 2002 12:31 AM

there is the ECU the CPU and the power steering computer
the ECU is under the carpet on the passenger side it is your brain for your car
the CPU is your brain for functions like your warning lights horn and car alarm
your power steering computer is self exclamatory
ECUs are swapable as long as they are in the same series (s4 s5) and are the same induction (turbo or non)

when i change the computer im gonna put gxl injectors in both the primary and the secondary but should i get this free computer? is it even an upgrade from mine? or should i just wait for a TII computer?

87racer Nov 14, 2002 12:32 AM

i thought i could put a TII computer in my car??? is this not a good i dea?

Evil Aviator Nov 14, 2002 12:38 AM

An 86 GXL computer is not an "upgrade" for your car, and will not do anything different than your current computer. Also, the GXL has the same injectors as your car, so there will be no "upgrade" there, either.

No

87racer Nov 14, 2002 12:39 AM

no.... my primary injectors are smaller i thought, as in less gas. i pretty sure i read that somewhere

Rotorific Nov 14, 2002 01:04 AM

fc injector sizes - NA - 460 cc's all 4 injectors
Turbo- 550cc's all 4 injectors
if you dont have the mods or a ported motor then its not a wise choice to swap turbo injectors....
also i didnt clarify that all swapable ecu's are the same... meaning there are no differences in ecus although it is rumored (no hard evidence) that the automatic ecu has different fuel and timing maps

YOUR best bet is to just keep what you got and drive on

All of the 2Gen non-turbo injectors have the same flow rate (approx 460cc/min). The only difference is that the earlier injectors had a different impedance. More info here:

what 4 injectors?
i thought i only had two ......where r the other ones!!!!!

TheTwinTurboRX-7 Nov 14, 2002 04:19 AM

ah ha ha ha

I suggest you go buy a Haynes manual, the primary injectors are under the intake manifold. You really sound like maybe you shouldn't be playing with that kind of thing yet until you learn some more. Also changing the computer doesn't do a damn thing. Computer only controls idiotlights and blowers and such. Changing the ECU makes a difference.

But lets clarify that the ECU swap he mentioned won't do anything different.

You can have your ecu "upgraded" by a few places. Just do a search for "ECU upgrade."

Rotorific Nov 14, 2002 08:24 AM

those two injectors you see are you secondary injectors your primary injectors are under your intake manifold and cannot be seen unless you look real hard...YOU need to get a haynes

banzaitoyota Nov 14, 2002 08:28 AM

Or just go online to www.fc3s.org and look at the FSM

87racer Nov 14, 2002 11:03 AM

would the ECU from the 86 gxl be an upgrade to my 87 base model?

87racer Nov 14, 2002 11:04 AM

by the way, thanks for the info

banzaitoyota Nov 14, 2002 11:08 AM

No

Roy James Nov 14, 2002 11:11 AM

jesus man gabe just sat there and told you and your still gonna ask the same question you asked in the begining

87racer Nov 14, 2002 11:16 AM

and im saying would it be better to have the 86 upgraded or have mine upgraded and then place it back in???? sorry i wasnt very clear. i mean the stupid thing would be free for me if i just take it out. im just wondering if its worth my time.

Ryde _Or_Die Nov 14, 2002 11:20 AM

Something went wrong with my post....see below.

Turbonut Nov 14, 2002 11:21 AM

If it's free, just take it. Never know what you'll want to do in the future after becoming more educated on the rotary.

The ECUs that you are comparing are the same. There is no upgrade from a different car/model/ect that will be an upgrade. Only way to get an upgraded ECU is to send yours out to be upgraded or to go with an aftermarket standalone ECU(big $$$$).

87racer Nov 14, 2002 11:26 AM

ok.... thanks..... about how much does it cost to have the ECU upgraded?

Ryde _Or_Die Nov 14, 2002 12:49 PM

www.corksport.com has EL Prototypes I believe even though they don't have it on their site for our cars.

www.nopionline.com has JET ecu upgrades.

www.mdrace.com has an ecu upgrade(their site is currently down though).
