Computer Chip

Are there any chips made for a 86 NA? I saw that Jet performance products makes one but its $499, How much is an S-AFC II? Mostly I want to know if there is some type of upgraded chip or reflashed ECU i can put in my car

wow, this is a very common question. You should do a search on this website & check the FAQ at the top of the 2nd gen page as well.

One of this website's sponsers is selling a chip that offers a built in fuel cut/flooding prevention like the 89-92 Series V 2nd gen rx-7s. Plus rev limiter removal and the chip kills the stupid 3200 rpms warmup/emissions.

Some of the more expensive chips offer better fuel & ignition curves for 87 or 93 octane. Plus they can account for exhaust, intake, & ported engine upgrades... although it's not fully tuned obviously. Do a search and you'll find it.

I say, forget the chip and go piggyback or standalone. you get more control that way.

I had a superchips reprogrammed ECU on my '86 N/A. Basically was just a reworked fuel and ignition map. Their claim was 20Hp/Tq over a otherwise completely stock car, but Im not real sure about that. The gain was definately noticable, but for only a few hundered more you can go standalone, which will give you much more control.

is the s-afc a stand alone?
that seems like what everyone here has.

i thought the safc was a piggy back to upgrade and modify fuel curves.. those who have a safc please do tell me what it does for you and wht can you change..can it modify so you can run a open air BOV

ps..is running an open air BOv bad for s5 rx7 with eveything else stock

No, the S-AFC is just a piggyback fuel controller. Full standalome EMS would be something along the lines of WOLF3D, Microtech, Haltec, etc..
The advantage to a full standalone over just a piggyback is that you have MUCH more control and fine tuning capabilities. You can alter fuel as well as ignition maps.

No the S-AFC, is not a stand alone computer. It modifes the AFM readings (or some signal) that go to the ECU so that you can add or subtract fuel as you want.
A standalone EMS like Haltech, Microtech, Wolf etc... Allow you to get rid of the stock engine controll system, and the new EMS will controll everything, and just about every decent system will allow you to controll Ignition and Fuel.

SO.....

Piggyback - your Series V electric OMP works
Cheap Standalone - premix or Series IV mechanical OMP conversion
Expensive New Haltech - controls electric OMP

You still can't control some engine functions like VDI since it's mechanical right ?

Ok then I guess the question I need to ask is, Oon a lightly modded NA what should I do? Do i really need modified ignition curves or will being able to tune my fuel be enough? I just ran a 15.2 in my car and I'm hoping that by going to the dyno with a adjustable fuel computer i can gain some hp after tuning, or would i get a much bigger gain if i could control ignition?
