Cold Air Intake to the Turbo

Ok, look at these pictures I took, I was checking out some stuff under the hood of my car yesterday, and i pulled on the pipe coming from the air filter... notice the duct tape put on there by the previous owner... what do you guys think I should do... ?

Rx7Nub 12-11-02 12:54 PM

and a picture with it pulled off...

Samps 12-11-02 01:07 PM

Duct tape should never be left on a car for any longer than it has to be. I can't really see what the problem is in those pics; it's too damn bright.

Rx7Nub 12-11-02 01:22 PM

The problem is I can just pull the intake pipe off the turbo inlet with me hand, I don't know if it sounds like a problem to you, but it does to me...

Ditto.

Kinda looks like the turbo inlet duct is being held to the turbo using duct tape instead of a clamp.

If I replace the plastic pipe from the intake, with like a 3" piece or something, should I do the TID mod with it aswell.. ?

Rotorific 12-11-02 01:27 PM

Yeap and GET A CLAMP. :)

Rx7Nub 12-11-02 01:29 PM

Is the TID mod easy to do myself? Or do I need a welder to make bends in like an almunized 3" pipe or something?

zenkiFC 12-11-02 01:29 PM

i tried the west virginia chrome on mine when it got old and cracked and it didnt work to long, i think youd be better off making/buying a new one

Juan 12-11-02 01:34 PM

Yes the TID mod is easy. Theres many posts about making one here. I recently did mine and everything went smoothly. Is the search function still disabled? If not you can do a search for TID MOD.

Scott 89t2 12-11-02 01:34 PM

it's probbaly cracked. a clamp wouldn't help.

do the TID mode or buy a new stock one.

it's easy to do. make a ABS plastic / rubber one from home depot if you don't want to deal with metal.

Rx7Nub 12-11-02 01:36 PM

Sorry to sound like a complete idiot, but what exactly does the TID mod do? Right now, I don't really know what the point of it is, so if I knew what it actually did, I could understand what to do alot better... thanks for all the help guys!

Juan 12-11-02 01:44 PM

Youre elimitating two 90 degree turns from the air flow sensor to turbo. The air will flow faster since it doesnt have to make two hard turns before entering the turbo. Ask someone to post a link to instructions. I would but I lost all my links when my harddrive kicked the bucket yesterday. :(

Scott 89t2 12-11-02 01:44 PM

that peice of plastic with the tape on it is called the TID (turbo inlet duct) the TID mod just replaces that pipe with a bigger / straighter one.

http://www.1300cc.com/howto/how2/TID.htm

it makes a nice difference in power.

Rx7Nub 12-11-02 01:46 PM

Ahhh, I see, I thought it was more complicated then that, I had a bunch of other things in my head that I thought I had to do aswell... sorry, it's true, I am a dumbass, thanks for helping me out!

fastrotaries 12-11-02 01:47 PM

well for starters, it fixes the problem that you have with the TID being on there to loose. If it pops off while you're driving then your car will stall. The mod makes the tube bigger which allows more air. Chris sanders sells one made out of polished aluminum. Some nice work and it's bigger than the stock one which will set you back at least $120 new. The stock one has a life expectancy of about 10 yrs so you could also get a used one cheaper.
Oh and it's MY hand, not Me hand. Silly cannuck. let us know if you any more problems.

TID mod is a must!

Yea the TID mod is a must! My car is running at 289,000 kilometers and still has the original engine and turbo (both re-built, but original). But the TID is getting brittle now (also original). It actually cracked on me and I had to fix it with some goop temporarily just for winter storage, but for sure the first thing that I am doing is the TID mod once summer hits again.
