Coils dead?

How can i tell if either of the coils are bad on my 88 NA? I was checking timing and when accelerating/revving the leading coil is firing all screwed up, intermittently. I failed emissions 3 times already due to HC being just slightly (12ppm) too high. I did plugs, wires, timing, O2 sensor. I still need to do the TPS but i dont think thats the problem.
Also, above 5k rpm at WOT and when im doing almost WOT at 6+ k rpm the car makes a noise like cloth ripping and hesitates big time. I didnt think it would be a coil because under no load it will rarely do it. I can drive it at 7.5 k rpm all day long so long as im not accelerating. I need help cause i need to do emissions very soon and a new used coil is expensive.

have you done a simple resistance check on the coils? That's where I'd start anyway.

Ok, i got a used coil from a junk yard for $30. Put it on and went to test the car. It made the noise for, maybe a second at 5k rpm and then stopped. It doesnt do it anymore. Makes me wonder if it wasnt a connection or something, who knows.
