Clutch/trans. problem. need ur help asap

hi im having a problem with my clutch and need to know or try to know whats the exact problem..

o0okay it start off when i was leaving some parking lot that has a little bump on the entrance way. so once i hit the bump on the entrance i apply my feet on the clutch peddle to neutral at the same time suddenly i heard some kinda popping noise or some unusual noise from the clutch peddle. instantly the car was running at the time and i couldn't put the clutch in gear anymore. so i turn off the car and put it gear it went in smoothly. than start the car again with neutral and try to put it in gear, it would not go in whats so ever. than when i put it in gear when its not starting and try to start the car it would not start at all and it try to go forward and seem like something is stuck( not suppose to move forward when my feet on the clutch and its in gear) .WEIRD.

ANYBODY KNOW OR HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM
? it doesnt seeem major but is it maybe the clutch fork or the circle thingy broken or came out of place?

It could be the hydraulics (slave / master cylinders), or it could be that the fork and release bearing are binding up as you try to move them. Take a look at the slave cylinder and fork, as someone else presses the pedal down.

Check the play on the fork. Check fluid at the clutch master cylinder. Like rocket said, have someone pressing the pedal while you look at the slave and see if it moves the fork.

yes the slave cylinder move and the forks moves perfectly fine. that was the first thing that i check. and also the fluid is also should be where it should be.. i'm guessing it should be the bearing or something that's INSIDE the transmission

could be the pilot bearing is crap and wont let the input shaft stop spinning. Also a friend of mine had a similar problem in his car that turned out to be a broken clutch fork

Your throw out bearing took a shit. It's always engaged.

farberio 04-19-09 12:28 PM

I vote bad pilot bearing.

nopistonsPWR 04-19-09 12:29 PM

im going to take it apart and see whats going on in there.. thanks for your opinion and info fellas i appreciate it. ill give u some update asap

I let off the clutch on day while down shifting and heard a pop. Clutch still works fine but now when i am in low gear and push the clutch in quickly, I hear a "cluchung" type noise....doesn't happen in higher gears though.

I actually thing I snapped a mount somewhere because it sounds like something lifting up and falling on metal.

jake1191 04-19-09 12:58 PM

i know i have a screeching sound in my car but i dont think its the pilot or throw out bearing because they have just over 1500miles on them but ill replace them when i do my TII engine swap in a month or so. also going to replace all wheel bearings to be sure too.

nopistonsPWR 04-20-09 12:40 PM

i took out my trans and it seems like my throw out bearing was dirty gook up with oil and out of age. and also my pilot bearing was broken into pieces. can it possible be that little pilot bearing? what does it do anyways? and also can i take out the pilot bearing with out taking the pressure plate and clutch out? or do i have to take them both out?>

farberio 04-20-09 09:34 PM

I am not 100% sure on this, but its my belief that the pilot bearing allows the input shaft of the trans to move at a different speed relative to the engine, thereby allowing you to shift into gear thanks to the syncros.

You need to replace the pilot bearing, remember to install a seal. You can probably get it out with the clutch on, but its better and easier that you take it off. The reason is that you want to be sure that all of the rollers from the dead pilot bearing are removed from the clutch area. Be sure to use a magnetic pickup in the e-shaft to fish out all of the pilot bearing bits and pieces.

While its out, it could be a good time to replace the clutch. You should at the very least replace the throw out bearing.

just wondering IS THE 89-91 S5 PILOT BEARING ANY DIFFERENT FROM THE 86-88 S4 PILOT BEARING?

i am sure of this: The throwout bearing is the problem, its the one that matches the speed of the engine and tranny to change gears with the syncros, the pilot bearing is a helper tool that lines the input shaft up to the motor, if the pilot bearing went bad or was not installed you would hear a wine in your tranny and the input shaft would vibrate because its longer than the flywheel and clutch housing and the pilot bearing takes up the last inch of room for the input shaft. Other than a wine and possible premature tranny failure the car would still shift gears as normal and when the tranny fails you would not be able to shift gears In fwd cars the input shaft isnt as long as rwd cars so there is no need for the pilot bearing as these shafts wont vibrate and cause premature failure. If you replace the throw out bearing you should replace the Clutch, pressure plate, pilot and throw out bearing, and resurface your flywheel and if your pilot went bad you might want to get your tranny checked out as well.

but is there any difference between the s4 and s5 pilot bearing?

I don't think your right. I know from experience that a blown pilot bearing will not allow you to shift when the motor is running, and the fact that the OP confirmed that the pilot bearing is broken I think we can say for sure that that's the problem.

There is no difference.

Mr.FD3S 04-22-09 03:14 AM

i have the same problem but when the car is off i can engage all gears freely. but when the car is on and running it wont budge into ANY gear. same thing? the pilot bearing?

nopistonsPWR 04-22-09 08:54 AM

Yes it's the pilot bearing same exact problem l mine. Change the throw out bearing also in that case

Mr.FD3S 04-22-09 08:40 PM

ah thanks a bunch! mazda should have them correct?
it fixed yours like magic?
