Clutch Replacement Question
I am having a friend replace my clutch that i purchased, he has never replaced a clutch in a 2nd gen rx-7, but we were wondering how long the job usually takes the amount of effort it takes to do the job, so we can compromise a labor cost. Thanks guys. also how much a mechanic would normally charge for this job too.

For a new clutch most mechanicals charge a bit of labor, somewhere between 300-700. Some guy around here wanted a aftermarket clutch in their mx-6, cost like 250 shipped for the clutch (ACT of course) then another 500 for labor. I hope others have input, since this is just from mechanics in northren Minnesota.

figures are a bit high, depending where you go. dealer will be 600, a decent local garage maybe 250-300. I can change a clutch in a 7 in 3.5 hours, but it will take almost twice that if you haven't done it before.

I did my own in my S4 vert, not that bad at all, just time consuming. On the other hand, Kevin Landers can have the tranny out and a new clutch in in probably and hour and a half, if that.
Have a helper when the tranny drops and goes back in, a bit heavy. Plus, be sure to get one of those clutch alignment tools. Being new, you and a friend could easily knock this out on a saturday. Good Luck! |
thanks guys

It is a good idea to get your flywheel resurfaced. Get a 2 1/8 inch socket from your local heavy tool rental place, put it on a breaker bar, and give it a good smack to get the nut loose. They say its 300 ft/lb but thats bs. Once you have the nut off, give the flywheel a quick slap with a hammer to loosen it.

I replace my clutch about a month ago... for the 1st time it took maybe two-three hours to get everything off, and then to put it back on maybe took a little more than one.
Its a pretty easy job. The hardest part was benching the tranny back up. |
