how can you tell witch needs to be replaced

Have you looked at the Clutch slave,or the Clutch line?
the slave will leak on the inner side of the Unit itself, where the rod goes into it and Pushes on the Clutch fork.Check that area for any Fluid.
The line should be checked to see if it has any obvious cracks,or the Connections between the hose and teh Master and slave are Tight.
The Master will be Hard to Check as it usually will leak Into itself.Another place to check the master out is to Take it off the firewall and see if it has Leaks on the Inside where the rod from the Pedal pushes into the Master.
If you are too lazy to do that, just say Screw it and buy a Clutch master,a slave cylinder and a Clutch line.

20 year old master and a brand new slave = blown out master. That is why they should be replaced together. You won't have to bleed it twice. :)

Ask me how I know!!
