Clutch Help Please

The clutch on my rx7 will go down the first couple of inches with no resistence what so ever. then its not much resiostence at all till it gets about 3 inches from the floor. master cylender fluid levels are fine. any ideas what it could be???? clutchless in san antonio

How about the fluid color?

It should be clear as beer. (If you don't drink - clear as piss)

Any dark tint is your master cylinder piston cup starting to fail.

hmmm well the color is actually BLACK! lol. install new master cylender?????????

All that black is worn off rubber from the piston cup.
Moisture absorbs into the fliud over time & rusts the bore.
The corrosion pits then scuff off the piston cup.

This is why we (me included) should bleed the clutch & brakes periodically.

If you're up to it, rebuild both the master and slave cylinders (kits cost less than $25 for both at your auto parts store), then use new fluid and bleed. Don't worry about your hydraulics for another year now, at least...

If rebuilding them yourself scares you, new and rebuilt units are available at several vendors, invluding Mazdatrix...

I just found this picture.
Here's an example of a worn out clutch master.
Note the 12mm deep well & swivel used to pull it..

Most of the time the slave cylinder goes bad at the same time as the
master or very shortly thereafter, it's best to swap them both at once. (NOW we tell you..lol)
