Clutch going
Think my clutch is starting to go. I have a 91 coupe with about 112k miles. The past couple times I drove it, I noticed that when I get on it hard entering the highway the car smells like burnt rubber for 30 secs then goes away. Also feels sluggish if I step on it at high rpms on the highway. Clutch going?
What's a good replacement for mostly stock market for spirited driving? Exedy stage 1 or 2? Other good options? Thanks |
Clutch slipping doesn't smell like burnt rubber, smells more like brake pads rubbing hard
And a little grinding going into gears could be a weak clutch, but it could also be wore master/slave not pushing hard enough If your going to replace the clutch, just get a normal exedy clutch kit for a n/a, unless you want some extra clamp force, but its not really needed with stock HP |
Classic sign of a weak clutch is slipping in higher gears. If you step on the gas and the RPM's go up but not relative to the speedometer, it's on its way out. The RPM's should fall back in line when you let off the gas. A weak clutch can sometimes cause gear grinding because the disc becomes warped from the heat of it slipping and contacts both the flywheel and the pressure plate even when the clutch pedal is depressed.

You can also do the 5th gear test where you put the car in 5th and slowly let the clutch out will sitting still. If it doesn't try to stall you need a new clutch.

It's amazing how fast you realize how bad your old clutch is once you put a new one in!
