Clutch chatter
 

Checked the search, no definative answers just alot of people with the same problem ... :P

I just dropped a new ACT copper 4 puck with a HD pressure plate in with new pilot and release bearings about 2000 miles ago. It's been chattering since the start and it chattered with the old clutch as well... not as bad with these tho. I don't see any problems with the current hydraulic system but the fluid is really black. I ordered an all clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder as well as a clutch hose (it was only 80 bucks from vic british).

So, anyone have any exp with this stuff and possible resolutions?

(it'll all be a moot point when i switch to a turbo 2 driveline in 20-30k)

Are you sure the clutch is chattering? It could be your trans chattering. Might need new trans mounts. Every now and then my trans and driveline "chatters."

Did you have the flywheel resurfaced? IF not, that is most likely your problem.

Yes, flywheel was resurfaced. I checked the mount and the rubber is good... not cracked. Hopefully it will warm up a bit this weekend and i'll install my clutch hydraulic's to see what happens.

These assemblies have vertually no, I believe marcel, material between the disc layers, along with no vibration absorbing springs in the hub. It will definitely give a harsh engagement. My feelings are that people tend to install assemblies that are really for track use, then complain about the engagement. You can't have both.....See below-

ACT 4& 6 PAD RACE DISC
ACT Copper Ceramic Race Discs are available in 4 or 6 pad designs. These pads (pucks, buttons) are highly durable and resistant to heat and actually perform better when hot. They hold approximately 28% more torque than an organic lining. Copper ceramic discs engage fairly harsh and are not normally recommended for street use. Shifting is quick and sure due to the lightweight rigid design. No worries about broken center sections or springs either. 6 pad discs are recommended on larger sizes to absorb the heat or for smoother engagement when fast shifting may not be a concern. 4 pad discs engage harder and shift faster and are well suited for smaller disc sizes from smaller engines.

I really don't think it's supposed to be THIS rough. I was looking for a harsh engagement really. But not a chattering. But I can see what you mean a bit. I was expecting there to be a more "Toggle on/off" type engagement ... not a slipping chatter. The racing beat brace specifies that it removes common chatter from the clutch engagement... a common problem with rx7 owners (so they say). I think that would take a little bit of bite out of the problem.

Never tried it, but may help slightly. It won't stop chatter, but may make it a little less annoying.

Sorry, wanted to add-Most of these "racing" type assemblies have a very fine line between engage and disengage. That's why you do get the chatter. As I stated above, the waffle material between the disc, puck lining, is not existant to absorb the engagement, or the compression from the pressure plate.

Well it makes me feel better that it's not actually damaging the clutch but it's been designed to act that way.

The chatter should lessen a bit as you break it in. Also don't assume that the flywheel guy did a perfect job. Also, are you sure you kept everything clean and dry when you put it together?

Absolutely, The shop that did the work did a good job, even removed the dowles and re-finished that surface as well.

I replaced the clutch slave and master cylinder (easy job and well worth the rewards). It's removed about 90% of all chatter. Most of it now comes from the fact that it is a stage 1 clutch and i'm starting to feel the "Toggle on/Off" that ACT was referring to and I like it.

I'm ordering teh RB engine brace this weekend so it will be interesting to see how it all goes. Hopefully it will take out the other 10%.

My 6 puck would get chatter sometimes until I learned how to drive it better.
