cluster/blower motor

well, My gauge cluster/blower motor has stopped working, and it has me stumped. No fuses are blown, but its like they have no power. is there a relay for the gauge cluster? I know where the one for the blower motor is, but where is the one for cluster?

any ideas as to what it is? I have a constant power going into the blower relay, but when its turned on there is no other power? maybe the relay is bad?

any grounds it could possibly be? any help is appreciated, I have tried searching and this seems to be an uncommon problem.

There is no relay that powers up the cluster, it gets power through the 10A "METER" fuse.
The blower motor pulls power from the 30A "HEATER" fuse and IIRC, the "WIPER" fuse may be involved as well (check the FSM).

At any rate, if the fuses check good and you have +12v on their output side, then the problem lies in the wiring between the fusebox and the cluster/Logicon (which controls the heater fan).

well, no luck so far. I guess im going to pull the dash out again! I have been chasing/testing wires and still no luck, the fuses are good and the wires seem to be fine. I can take the heater relay off and make a jumper to the ground on the plug and it kicks the air on, but still no luck with the cluster. could that relay be bad? would that affect the gauges working? I wouldnt think so, but maybe its in the same circuit.........shittt.....

There is a Black/Yellow wire that comes from a 7.5 amp fuse that is part of the IG1 fuses and this supplies power to the gauge cluster. Do you have voltage on this wire as it comes out of the fuse box on its way to mating up with the meter harness?
The B/Y wire coming from the fuse box is part of the front harness which then connects to the meter harness at connector FME-01.

well, I have 12v at the fuse, and no power at the connector. the only wire that pulls anything keyed on or off is the brown/light blue wire, and its only .17v. I have traced the black and yellow wire and dont see anything wrong with it as far as I have traced it. I have the dash and everything out, trying to tear into it a little more to figure this beast out. Still no luck with the blower motor either. This is very frustrating, buying someone elses project is always fun i guess.......anymore insight would be appreciated. and a connector diagram for the cluster would be helpful, its an N/A s4

METER fuse is used by the gauges and the heater as shown in the attached jpgs.

METER fuse is on the IG1 buss as shown in the jpgs.

IG1 is fed power by the key. IF the engine on this car runs, then IG1 is getting power because the ENGINE fuse is also on this IG1 buss.

In the jpgs the number 1 followed by the (2) represents the METER fuse on IG1.

It also feeds the backup lights/reverse lights and the WARNING lights in the warning cluster. Plus cruise control power.

I should have 12v coming into the cluster from the black/yellow wire, right?

Correct!

alright! well since part of the harness was hacked up, I wired the power in with an inline fuse from the ignition! Now everything works great! thanks for all the help fellas, I appreciate all the diagrams and help

one more question, everything is working but my tach signal is wrong, its reading 2x what my rpms are at. I have my signal wire ran into the Yellow/blue wire, which is how it was before and it worked perfectly. is there another signal coming in that goes to the tach? and also, what does the Brown/blue dot wire go to from the black connector?

What size fuse (amperage wise) did you use in your rewire?

And what black connector are you talking about?

i think he mean off the leading coil , mine was wired like that , not any more thou

noskillz 07-11-10 06:46 AM

that cant be the right diagram for my car because all of these colors are different on my plugs. The brown/blue wire im talking about is on connector me-01, not the other one.....

but I have the tach going into the yellow/blue wire, which is how it was before and it worked. is there anyway to recalibrate the tach? maybe its off, but its odd that it seems to double my rpms almost exactly.

Again, what is the size of the inline fuse you used???

Diagram provided by HAILERS--(post #9). Is this more like it?

its a 10 amp fuse, that diagram looks like the same one thats posted above. hmmm......let me look at some stuff and get back with you guys

There are two diagrams in my previous post. Lefty is the S4 and righty is the S5. You're supposed to look at the S5 diagram to see if it matches your pinout. Also, it might be a stretch but the cluster is supposed to have a 7.5 amp fuse and not a 10 amp. I would use a 7.5 amper if I were you and see if this changes anything if at all

HAILERS 07-11-10 05:20 PM

The jpg I attached of the black and white round plugs on the back of the instrument cluster came out of the online 88wiring manual. So I went and looked at my big buck 1987/1986 FSM and it shows the exact same wire pinout.

If your does not look like the jpg I attached.............someone had messed around and repinned the two plugs for unknown reasons.
