CLUNK! Whats wrong??
Heya,
Just bought my first Rx-7 its an 87 TII, Turbos arnt working but thats not my worry(i got that worked out). When Im driving, if I give it to much gas, or let the clutch out to fast, I hear a loud bang from the rear end. I was told its the U-joints. Is this true? Cause another thing I had heard was the rear end was sliding! I hope to hell thats not it. Please help :) Thanks Wolf |
it's the front mount on the rear diff.
$63 from www.mazdamotorsports.com and it's stronger then the stock one. it's a bitch to install though. |
Scott 89t2 is right. Its your front differential mount. You can buy that one or get one from the dealer (costs more). Installation isnt as hard as everyone makes it sound. Do a search (upper right hand corner) for "differential mount" and you will find alot of threads on the subject. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your TII!!!

Sweet, thanks! Was worried it might be more expensive.
|
where the hell do you buy the part on this site? they want my left arm to register for the catalog? yeah right.
|
or buy one from www.scalliwag.com
|
I think you have to be a member to buy from that site.

shit i guess this is what i am experiencing in my s4 na...
usually i hear it when shifting into second, if i dont feather the clutch.. seem likely? atleast you can barely hear mine.. but im sure like you guys.. i can hear ANYTHING out of the normal.. i even get bugged when there is little pebbles in the tires and it makes sounds when driving along the street. - harhar - |
Might not just be the front differential mount, ask me how I know?
Other possible causes: - Driveshaft u-joints - Rear diff mounts - Tranny/engine mounts possibly - Half-shafts (axles) - Differential needing a rebuild - Differential needing its backlash calibrated I've done everything (including the front diff mount) except the rebuild/backlash. All my mounts are solid now (including rear diff mounts) and my driveshaft is brand new. I finally took it to an auto tech and had him inspect it (the diff) and he said it's definitely the backlash. It wasn't a waste doing the other things, though, in the process I found out both my tranny mounts were shot, 1 engine mount was broken, and my new driveshaft took away some of the clunking. Now to fix the backlash :| Also, scalliwag is awesome, he's the guy that made all of my solid mounts (except the rear differential delrin ones I put in) and they're great. |

great guy good products and yes i got everything i ordered in less than a week |
is his front mount the one that wraps the diff, also mazdatrix has one that has no wight block on the front and a stiffer rubber is this a good idea?

i had the same issue
but mine was my sub frame... hitting the body frame.... this was due to the rear adjustable camber link i installed and it was too close to the frame.. |
