"Clunk" sound from transmission in 1st and 2 gear

I have searched and found a lot many posts about rattling but my transmission makes a "clunk" noise when I shift into 1st or 2nd gear (5spd), not so much with the other gears if at all. The sound is almost like if you dropped a heavy plumbers wrench under the car while you where in it.

I have ordered some Red Line MT-90 to replace the transmission fluid, I don't know if it has ever been replaced.

If anyone knows anymore about this symptom, I would really appreciate some more info.

Thanks in advance

when does the clunk happen? when you put the car in gear or depress/release the clutch?

MaxJenius211 05-16-07 11:12 AM

The sound occurs when I release the clutch in 1st and 2nd gear. There is no additional noise while the car is running, but If I engage the clutch and the release it the noise occurs again.

My bet would be a tranny or Diff mount.

Think first about the front drive shaft U joint. Classic for the front when clunk/clang is heard in low gears, the rear joint usualy presents as clunk/clang in higher gears.

Tranny/dif mounts noise up in alny gear.

Try coasting and shifting in and out of 2nd gear, does it still make the same noise?

Yep, it happens when I do that. Basically every time I release the clutch in lower gears.

I'd check your mounts first. I believe the u-joints are also bad it you get vibrations while accel. and decel. (bad front u-joints for accel, and bad rears for decel.)

Mine have always made a slight clunk when shifting in and out of gear while coasting, i imagine it's the mounts, i got some poly ones, i just haven't put them in yet.

Are they hard to replace?

No and if your u-joints are bad they cannot be replaced you will have to replace the whole driveshaft...but the most common cause is mounts.

You are incorrect, the u-joints can be replaced. There is a thread in the archive.

my car does the same kindof thing along with shifing into first and second hard some times, grinding second just for a tad while shifting at high RPMs, and second grinds just a tad when droping it in at higher speeds. Oh yea some times it also grinds just for a sec in reverse when i am in first and quickly shift to reverse (not burning out just or any stress on the drive line just shifting quickly)

DOes it make the noise if you leave the car in gear and hit and release the accelerator?

Mine does that, and its my diff mount

Can anyone point me to that archive post about the drive shaft U joint.
Yes, I searched. I did not successfully find.

Thanks
