Cheapo Generic Cats, Will it Work?

Well, I've come to the conclusion that no one within 50 miles of me can do a true dual exhaust without getting cats put on.

I was checking out some stuff today and found this:

http://www.discountconverter.com/universals/index.htm

Part number 2612.

What do you guys think of it? My current plan is to use this converter, but also use the RB true dual Y-pipe section. That way, when I can afford it I can buy the RB presilencer and it will bolt right in.

wont last more than 1 minute.

I've had good success with magnaflow, but I'm only using the main cat not the 3 piece setup. That shortens the lifespan to ~30-40K miles.

I need it to last me about 500 miles at the most, just until I can afford to put in the real RB presilencer. I don't need to pass emissions, but all my local exhaust shops won't do anything for me unless I get cats put on. I thought it would be great if I could get a few hundred miles out of it so I didn't have to blow so much of my "car parts fund" at one time :). I don't need something to last a long time, I need something cheap :D.

why do you say that?

it isn't true, however cheaper cats tend to break apart faster than more well built ones but mainly it depends on how well the car is running and how close the fuel ratio is tuned, excessively rich or lean burn will kill a cat within 100 miles but a good running engine even a cheap ass cat should last well over 20k miles.

Cybaster 09-15-05 09:28 PM

i say, gut out your blown cat, put a right sized pipe in it and use that as a test pipe,

then get a generic cat and use that to pass smog, once u are done, put your piped-cat in so it'll free-up some power and u don't have to replace the cat so often =D

run the one on the bottom
id think one designed for a towtruck can endure the heat????????/

Bullshit.
Rotary engine EGT's can hit 1600F.
Try hitting 1600F EGT's in a "tow truck"...

have you you ever ran a large converter that was originally designed for a towtruck?
could you read that i said, "itd think"

i dont know, maybe there was too many tears in your eye and your having trouble reading the post correctly

Don't you ever say anything that's true?
How about I just report you for spreading misinformation?

Why don't you go argue with Max on 900C+ EGT's.
You think a "tow truck" cat is going to handle 2000F EGT's?

i went with the cheap catco/magniflow cat, it lasted allmost a year and like about 30K miles before it hollowed out. for the price tho u can afford to burn a few!

The Griffin 09-16-05 02:36 PM

The new metal substrate cats are much smaller in size compared to ceramic substrate cats. They are supposed to be more robust and tolerate a much hotter exhaust...They are more money but would be worth it...Random tech, dynatech, vibrant make them,as well as others probably. If you search the 3rd gen forum you will dig up more info on them.

Turbo7MN 09-16-05 04:01 PM

I'm not sure you guys understand what I'm trying to do. I don't care if it lasts 20k miles. My state has no emissions testing, so as soon as I can afford to buy the RB road race presilencer (probably less than 500 miles will be put on the car in that time) , the cat is probably going to sit in my garage until MN decides to start emissions testing again. If I'm lucky, I'll never have to worry about a cat as long as the rest of the exhaust holds up.

Thanks for the input though, looks like I'll order the rest of my parts this weekend!

Then ya just get the cheap cat. Dont get some expensive high flow cat if your not really gonna use it

vhold 09-16-05 07:09 PM

Actually I have a related question.

My TII has a Racing Beat turbo-back system, but I am considering moving to CA next year.

Is there any way to replace the presilencer with a decent high-flow cat, and pass CA emissions?

Wow. That is one garbled mess. I wasn't working on RX-7's when I was 13 (I started when I was 14, actually) but I'm pretty sure I could at least form complete sentences.

I know this comment was directed towards Ted, but I've had to deal with slpin on Team FC3S in the past (I'm a mod over there) and I'm getting sick of seeing his BS on any forum.

I'm running a 3" magnaflow cat with no air intake pipe. I have no idea if that means it's designed not to require airpump air or if it will simply kill it. :) Frankly I find it noisy.

Racingbeat says that the presilencer can be replaced with a cat. You may have to have some extra tubing fabricated to make it fit etc. However they do not say if you will pass emmisions with a cat on their system. I'd like to think you would. My soon to be TII Vert will have the RB Turboback system. I will be swapping the presilencer with a cat and attempting to pass emmisions. :)
