Carpet is very heavy

Well, i've been wanting to take my carpet out since about 2 months ago. I like the interior look of a bare chassis. I dunno, maybe it's just me. Anyway, the carpet was extreamly difficult to get out! I had to cut sections to remove.. And i still can't figure out how it's routed under the dash... (up by firewall in center of car) is it one peice under there?

anyway, i only removed the carpet and it's padding (yellow) put it in a large outdoor trash can, and came out with a 39 lb drop of weight. i still have the tar to get rid of, but i need dry ice.

I plan on removing the tar... masking the dashboard off and repainting the interior red (chassis color)

I will post some before and after shots of my project

Later

damn, won't that make your car noisy as hell?

I heard that carpet removal is pretty difficult to do.

Relisys190 05-04-03 08:23 PM

I'm not sure how much louder it will get. Havnt driven it yet. BUt i will let you guys know. Later. Markus

p.S I'm sure it will be a bit warmer inside the car also. But. humm. SHit happends i guess

I took mine out a couple days ago due to cat piss smells, and yah i had to cut it around the Firewall. The car gets signinficantly louder inside, especially when your exhaust is somewhat rusting through but overall its not too bad. :)

The interior will be loud without carpet-- VERY loud without tar. I put new carpet in mine (VB carpet is lighter) and actually added sound deadening over the tar. IMO, the car is unbearable as loud as is gets with bare floor pan.

hey, i took all of my carpeting out except the part b/w the dash (cut around it) does anyone know how to get that stoopid A/C router outta there? the only thing i havent done is take out the dash, do have to in order to get that extra carpet out as well as that bulky A/C thing?

DrifterFD3S 05-04-03 10:03 PM

o ya i also ment to ask how dry ice takes the tar off...

Gene 05-04-03 11:26 PM

It makes the tar hard so you can chip it off in big pieces.

Relisys190 05-04-03 11:58 PM

Just got home after an hour drive.

I really did not notice any more noise. I can feel the heat from the tranny/exhaust a bit more in the cabin, but nothing unbearable.. My next plan is to remove the Tar (Dry Ice is my friend) and repaint the cabin/passenger area with a good quality (engine bay paint) the metal is slighly dirty under all that carpet.

Anyway i like it, i will clean some of the wireing up a bit, paint it and it will look good. P.S that carpet with all it's yellow padding is HEAVY as hell. and a pain in the ass to remove. BUt all in all, i like it

When you remove the tar, make SURE it's VERY VERY cold when you hit it with the hammer, otherwise little chunks (right where you hit it with the hammer) will stick and those are near impossible to get off)

CrackHeadMel 05-05-03 10:21 PM

Im goign to be doing the dry ice thing soon. Actuly as soon as i can buy dry ice. My car is guted, my dash is sitting acros the seats, very little carpet remaining, ill get the rest tommorow

Only thin i was worried about was when hitting the now very cold tar with a ahammer, do i have to worry about cracking the metal under it? I know this wouldnt be a problem normaly but after leaving dry ice on it for a bit, am i gona brake something?

no. Metal is strong. It won't get brittle just because you get one side of it to -20 or -30 degrees.

Relisys190 05-06-03 12:48 AM

yeah, our chassis metal of pretty strong and thick. Can i get Dry ice at like a publix... winn dixie type place (supermarket)

and about how much does it cost? As soon as i get that tar out, i'm repainting my chassis (cabin area) a nice bright red, and installing metal foot rests... like i said earlier, i'll post pics!!

"The carpet is heavy"

Yeah, tell me about it! Mine was saturated in coolant from a f'd up heater core. Mine weighed closer to 75 lbs! :) I'm glad I got the ugly maroon shiat out of there. I replaced it with light weight black carpet and underpadding!
