Carb setup on 2nd gen 6-port 13B...

I am curious if anyone is using a carb set-up on a 2nd gen 13b (6-port)engine and what you are using and more specifically, how is the ignition modified.

I have been wanting to do an n/a track car for a while, and for simplicity and uniqueness, I'd like to go with a carb. If all goes well, I plan to start on it soon so I can possibly have it on the track by summer. i will also keep the progress posted @ www.fc3s.org along side Project 86 :D

Mazdatrix sells a Holley set-up (I think), and racing beat is almost done with their new set-up for the 6-port 13B's. Are there any other set-ups available?

Joe,

check out http://www.mazdaracing.com/carbs.htm.

I'm not sure of their online transactions, but they are in Chatsworth (semi local)

For what it's worth, I see that there was a similar thread started recently, so my questions will be mainly for ignition set-ups (and fuel pumps)

What kind of track car are you talking about? SoloII, SoloI, ITS, hill climb. That could be important in what you do to your car.

If you must do a carb get a used weber/dellorto with the upper intake and throttle linkage. Buy a rebuild kit. As far as ingnition you can use the 81-85 distributor w/electronic ignition. These will bolt to the series 4-5 engine and work pretty good. I'm using this setup till I get my fuel injection setup and I'm happy but I want better control of the air/fuel delivery and fuel injection is the way to go IMO.

If you pull one off of a engine, please don't make the same mistake I made...I have 1 fake front tooth now because of my old distributor.

N1XRR - Ouch! Please tell us what you did so we don't make the same mistake, if you don't mind.

Easy... Jay-Tec 6-Port intake manifold, 650-700 cfm Holley, Racing Beat Exhaust. Use a late 13B ignition two MSD Coils, Taylor Spark Plug wires and presto!!!! It is a standard procedure here. Beats the hell out of buying a new cpu. Plus you get a power increase from hell!!!!! Have someone experienced do the carb settings... Racing Beat and Mazdatrix sell things way too expensive. So stay away from them. You will easily beat a stock Mustang 5.0 with the right carb settings. If you cannot find the Jay-Tec intake manifold a Racing Beat one will do, but Jay-Tec is a lot more straight.

HAILERS 02-05-02 07:22 PM

I've got one of those JAY-TEC sixports for sale. Very reasonable price. Make me an offer.

JOE@FC3S.ORG 02-05-02 08:37 PM

Hmm, any idea where I can get some info (pictures) on this JAY-TEC manifold?

HAILERS 02-05-02 08:45 PM

No. I bought it from either RAcing Beat or Mazdatrix about three years ago. They don't handle them anymore. Maybe Angel Guard knows.

JOE@FC3S.ORG 02-06-02 11:05 AM

Do you have any pictures of the manifold? I am trying to do my homework on this, but having a hard time finding any info on these. Are they made anymore or are they discontinued?

Also, do they only bolt to the holleys?

Thanks,

uhh... i'd like to know as well. so you cant use the stock fc ignition?

Angel Guard Racing Team 02-26-02 01:54 AM

Jay-Tec had a website but from what I hear it is becoming harder to find them. The good thing about jay tec manifolds is that they are straight down, no curve which is great for turbo setup since it gives you the space needed to work with it. If you can't find Jay-Tec then just go for Racing beat. But i would look for Jay-Tec... Have the car ported also on both intake and exhaust...

Angel Guard Racing Team 02-26-02 02:06 AM

They appear to be discontinued... We got ours a few years ago we got 2 of each back then (12-A, 13-B, 6-Port 13-B) Our drag car has one of those on a 3rd gen engine. There has got to be a few left somewhere... I would recommend going to the race track on an event weekend, the teams allways have stuff for sale...

13B2QuIcKNy 02-26-02 08:56 AM

jaytech went out of business(shame) so if u wanna do 13b 6 port.. you will need to find one for sale out there.. and the other hand u can wait till the racing beat 6 port intake manfold is done or buy a racing beat 4 port intake manifold and use 12a side housings on ur engine lol thats just more work...i would look for a jay tech if i was u... if u can find one... as for the ignition... 81-85 dist. works good...but you'll feel a hell of a difference... espeeeeeeeecially! with the right carb settings.. and espeeeeeecially if u do street or bridge port... forget it... youll be smokin those mustangs! buhahahahahahahaha!

13B2QuIcKNy 02-26-02 09:00 AM

another thing about jaytech intake manifold and curve designs.. if u run a jaytech I.M. and use a spacer between the carb and the manifold u cant run a filter... because the isnt enough clearance... nice huh lol but with the racing beat intake u can since its shaped different hope this info helps.....

for lack of availability at the time, i made my own 6 port intake. i used the bottom half of a stock intake, and welded some runners and a plate together. i am using a holley 650 double pumper w/ mechanical secondaries and jetted it down a bit. this is not in a 2nd gen though, it is a 6 port motor though.

side note...jay is still around and i can get in contact with him through someone i have met recently, he now shifted his business to building tube frame cars and fiberglass bodies

I must have missed this post :o: . I am leaning towards an ITS or e-prod car. I need to get the rule book so I can see what I can do.

I was out at Willow Springs Feb 23-24 weekend and saw a few ITS 2nd gens that were posting fairly impressive #'s compared to the rest of the field. (1.32-42's)

do you have any pics?
I am also intrested into swapping to carb on my N/A

ItsRotary7 02-26-02 10:59 AM

Hey joe,
First thing is that in ITS, you have to run the original fuel injection that came with the car and you cannot port the motor. In ITS you will make under 200hp at the motor.
Second in Ep you can run fuel injection (using the stock manifold and aftermarket ECU) and you can street port it also. In Ep production the limit is your pocket book. They are talking to be competitive in EP you have to be putting out somewhere in the 250-260hp at the motor.

Hey if you want to know how to set up your car for ITS send me an email at ITSRotary7@aol.com. By the way the Black ITS #2 RX-7 that was running at the front of the pack until it blew up a rear-end was built by me. I aslo live in escondido but my shop is in Kearney Mesa.

Cab he still make the manifolds? I know a couple of people who need them...

I remember that car. I have some photo's of it and got to talk to the owner for a few minutes (assuming that you are just the builder and not the driver too :) ). That car was one of the ones I had my eye on all day.

I was getting the impression that the stock efi was required for the ITS category, which if I wanted to do, I could get my hands on it. I still need to get a rule book to see what is going on.

I also want to get some info on the e-prod and see what is going on with that too. I have noticed that those cars seemed to be more built up, and more $$ invested.

I recommend using a holley Marine Carb. the kind that has no plates on the side I think it is 2011 or something (They are chrome color). They are also discontinued but these are great for, taking curves, hills heavy movements of the car also great on turbo aplications. You can still find them easily (rebuilt). Holley did not know what they were doing when they discontinued this model.

ItsRotary7 02-26-02 11:27 AM

Well Joe, Ep probably isn't the way to go if you want to win on a short budget. I have a 2nd gen we are slowly building into a EP race car, but I have been very cautious about the class. Guys are spending $50,000 to $100,000 on their cars.

If you want to go racing on a short budget, build it to either ITS or ITE rules. We have both of the front running ITS RX-7 out of our shop. I also have a close friend with one as well.

You need to spend more money in the suspension set up than anywhere else.

Marcus
