Carb or EFI?

Which is better, obviously efi is more modern, but will there be any gains with a carb on our cars. If so, are there any kits out for making our fcs carbureated?

As I have read in RX7 book which came out in 2000 they are saying that the two benefits of curbs is that they are much easer to tune and much cheaper then full upgrade of EFI

and you can add an atkins supercharger kit, they makem for carbs :)

MazdaRx7Racer4Life 01-03-03 12:23 AM

but can you like put a bigger carb and get ponies from it, or is there no real big deal?

Rotal 01-03-03 12:27 AM

Yes but as that book said that you can get more out of EFI the a curbs

MazdaRx7Racer4Life 01-03-03 12:40 AM

but wouldn't it be easier to upgrade, and na based, there are no real huge gains on efi, i was wondering if an na could be ugraded with a carb big enough to reach big hp? hehe, maybe open a hole in the hgood for the crb to peek out (nw im just talking crap) but seriously, what do you think?

MazdaRx7Racer4Life 01-03-03 01:27 AM

anybody?

carb is much eaiser to get ponies out of, If I had the carb setup on my Fc TiI I would kill almost every car on the street, N/A though power is much better with a carb setup, be sure to change to a 4.3 diff, then you'll prolly run times close with a TII!

The only area where carbs can beat EFI is cost. In every other area EFI spanks carbs completely. The problem with stock EFI systems is eventually the stock AFM and manifolds become a restriction. Peak power is about airflow, so if a carb can flow more air than the stock system, it'll make more peak power. But this will come at the expense of bottom-end torque, driveablity, economy and probably legality. Aftermarket ECU's remove most of the restrictions of stock EFI systems, and provide limitless tuning capacity for any bolt-on's you want. Any carb and manifold that can outflow the stock manifolds is going to be fairly big, meaning low air velocity through the chokes, which causes the problems mentioned above. However aftermarket EFI manifolds and throttle bodies can be even bigger again for even more power with no downsides. EFI isn't upset by temperature and altitude either, nor does it suffer from vapour lock. And those who think carbs are easier to tune than programmable EFI need to get there head out of the 80's. How can constantly swapping jets in and out compare with sitting in the driver's seat with a laptop? ;)

Like the others said the efi is better and its pretty available for the 13b but it just cost so stinkin much. thats why im going carb.
with efi you have to get new manifold, throttle bodies, fuel rails, fuel regulator, fuel injectors, air horns, air filters, new ecu.. ect ect... theres a coulple more things but it all adds up to at least 3k.
where as a carb setup you can buy complete for $750.

did you know they have a quad throttle body setup where it is basically a carb bolted right onto each port?

www.injectionperfection.com
and if you do a search there is some more links.

If I had the money i would go efi but I dont think the performance would be much different and for 2k+ its probable not worth it.

How much gains on a stock motor should you expect from getting a freeflowing manifold and carbs on there? What about on a streetported motor?
