Car starts then dies.....please help

Car has been running like a champ since the rebuild. Got in it a few minutes ago to run the trash to the dumpster and it fired up then died. Turn the key fires and dies. Is it possible I flooded it. I had the key on and was listening to some tunes while I was loading the trash. Probably sat with key on for about 15mins. Last time I drove it was Friday night and was doing fine. been parked since.

If it is a S4, you can remove the EGI fuse and crank it a few times with the pedal to the floor to "de-flood" it. Then replace the EGI fuse. NOTE: Fuse should be removed/installed with key off and out.

If it is a S5, just put the gas pedal to the floor and crank it. This will automatically cut off the fuel allow it to push the fuel out of the exhaust. It should start then.

The above will work if it is flooded. IF it is not flooded, the problems could be many. Some possibilities: Large vaccuum leak, disconnect MAF, bad ignition switch not powering the ECU/Fuel pump in the on position, etc.

As far as it flooding just by having the key on, it is unlikely unless you have leaky injectors. When you turn the key on the fuel pump runs for a few seconds to pressurize the line, a leaky injector would drip this into the intake and flood the engine. This wouldn't happen if you started it immediately.

Hope this helps,
Vince

dunno, could be. Try the unflooding process and give it a try!

Did the unflood procedure to be safe....changed the plugs as well since I had an extra set...
Still same thing. Fires then dies......As far as MAF wouldnt unplugging it cause it to not start as well. I got compression checked that. What a week 1st Katrina now My 7,,,sheesh

With the MAF unplugged... it will start then just die, because on start the ecu has a set enrichment of fuel set... then it goes and looks at the afm for how much fuel to add after that, if its unplugged then no fuel added = die
I'm sure ya already checked it by now... also check for the omnipresent vac leak... make sure your fuel pump is working right (sounds like it is, if it tries to start)... basically everything thats been said.

I have gone over everything I can think of. Got a buddy bringing my volt meter back.....gonna start checkin for gremlins.

ok this is weird...I unplugged the MAF and it started right up.....not smooth mind you but it started. Now when I plug in the MAF it starts and dies.....wtf is up with that. Is this a bad MAF or should I looke elsewhere.?

does it rev to like 4 grand and then die or does it just die?
and if it's S4, if it starts to cough, give it a ton of gas and see if it will rev, then die whenever you stop giving it gas. This constitutes another problem
Most likely thow.. if it's acting like it's flooded... make sure your plugs are firing (put um on the TB or something so you can SEE for sure) and make sure your fuel pump is clicking on and you're getting fuel and if you have an ohmeter, test for resistance across the AFM...
and maf = afm and it will not start with that unplugged... i think you're talking about something else...

you guys are not gonna friggin beleive this. .......there was a snake in my damn MAF. Not sure how it got there. I have a cone filter and adapter. Guess it must have somehow got in there during the storm the last week. It was DOA. was causing the flapper to not close. Had to cut it out...(YUCK).....any way runs like a champ now. Thanks for all your input.
Guess this thread is closed.....
