Car runs like crap.

I got off work today and drove about 30 miles to check out my buddie's rx7 (83).

I get to his exit and I need gas, I stop at a Pilot and get gas (full tank). It was running like it normally should when I shut it off. I go to start it, and it feels and sounds like it is running on one rotor. So I limp it home, about 27 miles from his house. I noticed that when I go to engine brake, it sounds like it normally would.

My theories:
-Bad gas or
-Bad coils or
-Bad spark plug or I swear to god if it's an apex seal, I'm just going to buy a v8. If it's something simple I will take care of it.

Thank you in advance for any help provided. :icon_tup:

My car running like crap makes me want to cry. :icon_no2:

Going to need a little more info, what year is your car? Does it happen as soon as you start the car, or after you drive it for a little bit? If you have a compression tester I would go ahead and check compression.

I would agree that a compression test should be done, even if you don't have a tester.. Use the ol' pull the bottom plug and crank it over method, just to see what it sounds like.

Engine braking generally feels different than normal when you lose a rotor (I just drove home my project TII on one rotor, about a 70 mile trip).

Is the car backfiring at all? I had disconnected the rear two fuel injectors to drive my TII home, otherwise the unburnt fuel was causing backfires..

Did you get above 3800 RPM at all on the ride home? Did it act closer to normal then?

My car is an '88 SE with 155,000. Previous owner said he replaced Apex seals through atkins. Yes it backfires alot and I did get it over 3800 rpm and it did get a little more power than lower rpms.

If its possibly a bad primary injector dont start going over 3800revs till you fix it. Running no fuel to a rotor is a bit safer then running ultra lean.

Compression test, however that may be(at least verify 3 decent pulses on each rotor) and work from there.

Can you write a how-to on how to do this so called "whoosh test?"
