In car clock flickering on and off?
 

I was driving my 88gxl last night and i noticed the interior clock kept flickering on and off everyone in a while it was also doing it in my garage while running , the time doesnt get reset though..
any ideas?
could it be a grounding issue , meaning i should redo all the grounds?

common problem, the solder joints in the back of the clock cluster are cracked.

good luck resoldering them, i have taking electronics classes and soldering classes and cannot get it to work

i have rebuilt many of them, nothing spectularly hard about resoldering them.. you just have to clean all the old solder off before putting new solder in place.

wierd thing, i changed my batter terminal connectors last night, and my flickering clock problem was fixed :dunno:

I re soldered mine. Sucked all the solder off, then re soldered. The joints looked great, but the flickering remained.

I tried it a second time, same procedure, same results.

Maybe some bad connections inside as well?

really does that also include all the hazzard lights and stuff by the clock or no?

My clock has not worked in over 5 years. My other hazzard lights work great. I haven't tried resoldering, I just tried cleaning it. Ever since I cleaned it, it now comes on, but not always, and doesn't keep the time.

that sucks is it just the back of the clock that has to be recleaned and resoldered or the whole clock itself , also how do you pop the little clock and light assembly off , do you put something between the dash and asembly and pry it off or is it more complicated ,

Maybe you just aren't "applying" yourself properly. Hehe. Thats what everybody told me in high school.

When I redid my clock, it took more than just resoldering the joints where the connector is. Make sure you use an ohmmeter to test the connections above it that might have burnt out. That's what happened to me, so I ended up having to solder a small piece of 22 gauge wire between the two points where the connection had been broken. They are pretty easy to see, since they are usually black or crusted over.

If you aren't confident about it, go buy a solder sucker. I got mine for like 7 bucks online. Radio shack has them too... But, I prefer the one I got on ebay. Its super easy to clean, and isn't a bulb-type. Its a piston type with a trigger. sucks REALLY hard and is self-cleaning for the most part. Has a replaceable teflon tip. Makes the job super easy.

If your clock is super retarded like Jpk3200's, you may need to fix some other stuff too.. but, I would have to say thats a pretty rare condition. Out of the 4 I've fixed, it was as easy as desoldering and resoldering.

i have all that soldering stuff i have one of those sitting around my basement somewhere i just have to find it now when pulling the clock out the wires just unclip right?

Nope... all of the ribbon cables are soldered in. You'll see how it all comes apart though. If you break the little black rubber pieces (I did on two of the ones I did). Don't sweat it. It goes together without them okay. Just make sure you have something holding the contacts apart.

I broke one of mine. What do you suggest to keep the contacts apart?

Use your imagination.. I think I took one of the pieces, and hot glued it in. I used a big wad of paper towels in the first one I did.. but then I thought about it.. and that just absorbs moisture. so probably not a good idea. :) If you have an old mouse pad, cut it up, use it as insulation.

ya i was kinda worried about those when i was doing it , so i just soldered all the contacts where the harness plugs in and it looks like it solved the problem ill just have to see though if not ill take it back out and do it properly lol

yup i drove it around for a bit...no more flickering thanks to everyone that replied!
