Cant remove flywheel!!! Help!

OK, this thing was on there GOOD... I have to get the damned flywheel off and well, it seems one of the bolt holes, well actually both, STRIPPED!!!

NOW what the hell can I do? Tried WD-40, HEAT, ETC, I just cant get it to come OFF!!!

Now I cant use my puller because the hole stripped out. This seems like some hard ass steel / iron so I am not sure i can drill them and tap them again. Is this going to be my only option?

Any help, ideas, or tips will be useful! thanks!

S5 N/A motor by the way. (manual Trans)

thanks!

I just finished doing this, and to be honest, unless you have the motor secured really well you're not going to be able to do this in your garage.

You can overcome it yourself, when there's a will there is a way, and spend a few hours trying to loosen it.

or you can go to your nearest tire/auto/service center, and slip them 15-20 bucks to do this.
Just make sure you/they have the 2 1/8th inch socket.

The way I have done it is to get a ball-pean hammer and put the ball into the middle of the flywheel. Then take a bigger hammer and give it a good couple whacks. Remember to replace the pilot bearing.

a good impact gun and sledge hammer / mallet work wonders.

So you got the flywheel nut off and you can't get the flywheel off the eccentric shaft?

Any girl can do this! :icon_tup: Read the faq, look at the video.

I used an 8# sledge, just tapped the surface exactly the way the girl in the video did it-worked like a charm.

There are many links to detailed flywheel removal threads in the FAQ.

Or having a fat friend jump on the end of your breaker bar...

if the big nut is off and you tried a fly puller and stripped the bolts. why dont you just get smaller bolts and put a nut on the back of them for your puller? that is if the hammer method doesnt work

Pele 06-18-09 05:14 PM

The hammer method always works.

I usually work on the engines while they're sitting on a tire on the floor or hanging from the chain on the end of the engine hoist.

Get the nut off with an impact, put it back on two or three turns, then wail on that MoFo with a dead blow hammer, prybar against one of the tension bolts, or even some well placed sledge hammer blows....

Hell, one time I got pissed off and used a large rock. I was wearing a ripped shirt at the time that only held on by one shoulder and ate one of those big ass turkey legs like you get at the Renaissance Faire for lunch. I went around the rest of the day scratching my pits and yelling, "RANGOR DESTROY!" like a fucking caveman.

Just release some rage on it. It'll come off.

when I rebuilt my 12a 2 years ago, I can't take off the flywheel too , try get a dead blow hammer , it really works!

NJGreenBudd 06-18-09 10:30 PM

sledge hammer. plain and simple. whack it right on the edge and it'll pop off.

wazway 06-18-09 10:50 PM

Hammer ftw, just make sure you put the flywheel nut back on a few turns, or else it could come crashing down on your toes xD
