Can I swap an s5 power-steering setup into an s4?
I have an s5 TII parts-car that has power-steering, but I'm guessing that it won't work with my s4 TII (with a manual-rack). I assume there would be issues with the CPU etc.
Does anyone know if this swap is possilble in any way? It seems like a waste of good parts if I can't use any (or all) of the s5 stuff. Thanks! ~Erik |

why do you want to rob yourself of about10 to 25 hp? Power steering is a huge drain on power. The only time I realize that I don't have it is when I'm in a parking lot. The big problem is when I'm holding a lidless drink, smoking a cig, talking on the cell, and trying to park in a crowded parking lot driving a five speed. But other than those times, there's no problems. A manual rack just makes you turn the wheel more times to turn the wheels. I think the manual rack ratio is 20:1 and power rack is 15 or 16:1.

But I think that everything is switchable. Yeah, they are cuz I have an s5 and my buddy has an s4 and we both have the same system.

I was driving my rx at trackdays with a ps rack without the pump, it was hell! :P
The S5 and S4 pump and rack is not the same. But you can use a s5 pump on a s4 rack by blending a hole in the rack.. Sindre |

It could be made to work....but you may have to do some custom wiring. IIRC the control CPU's have different plugs, and I doubt you'll fish them out of the existing harnesses.
But sure, it can be done. It might be a bit of a PITA but it can be done. And I'm not even going to touch the 25hp loss remark..............:molepoke: |

STOP POSTING MIS-INFORMATION. The power steering on a FC only uses about 2 HP and even then only when the power steering is active. On many all S4 and some S5 FC's the power steering is vehicle speed sensitive. The power steering is not even on at above 40 MPH and only on at 50% at only 15 MPH. So at 40 MPH there is no drain at all of power. Also, the 20.3:1 manual rack is 3.6 turns from end to end, while the both the 15.2:1 and 17.4:1 power rack have 2.7 turns end to end. |

Next question; IS THERE ANY PART FROM THE POWER-STEERING SETUP I CAN USE? Could I use the pump, the PS lines... Anything? Or do I really need to toss this crap and get an s4 setup. :( (lol) |
as mentioned by classicauto you could probably swap over most of it, however if the vehicles harness is for engine speed sensing steering and you want to add vehicle speed sensing steering, then you will need to adapt over the wiring (probably by running a few wires)

have any of you guys ever picked up a complete ps rack pump cooler and engine bracket sooooooo much weight. And it will cause some drag on the motor at any speed. just in the prosess of putting a manual rack on mine. its a race car so weight/power does matter.
