Can I reuse this rotor and housing
 

I posted in the general rotary tech section, but didn't get any responses. maybe this 2nd gen section will get a lot more attention ;) This is from an 87 TII

After going boom last summer due to screwing up my timing, I decided to finally tear this engine down and see what I need to do for a rebuild. It was quite easy I did it all myself in about 2 hours. This thing is so simple! Now I need to know if my rotor and housing are reusable. The housing is scored in the center in 2 spots. The rotor has a slight score in the middle. Every apex seal groove though is perfect. My end plate and center plate for this housing are perfect. Everything else was great. I found that my seal in this rear rotor cracked in the middle (hence the housing getting scored in the middle.

I did not clean any of these parts at all. I just wiped them with a paper towel to get some oil off them

You can clearly see the score. It is not deep at all, just feels very scraped and obviously the chrome isn't there.

You can definitely see it took a chunk out. The score is deepest right at the exhaust port.

As you can see on the rotor a little bit is gone but the groove felt OK. All the other seal grooves are perfect.

I'm guessing the housing is junk. I did some searching & reading and found that near the exhaust a score/gouge whatever-you-want-to-call-it isn't usually an issue. However the score near the intake/compression area of the housing leads me to believe this thing is kaput! It's not deep in the least, but it's there and can't be a good thing at all. I have a j-spec motor that overheated, I'll tear that thing down and see if I can use the rear housing.

As for the rotor I THINK it's OK just by looking at it/feeling it. I'm not an expert so if people are saying it's shot I have no problem replacing both parts.

So what do does everyone think?

you could try them out, BUT its nothing that i would ever put in my motor so i would say just find some used ones and call it good. now if you have 2 blown motors laying around you should have enough parts to make one good motor.


so in short i wouldn't recommend that you use them and even if it did work it probably wouldn't last long at all.

rotor, could be milled to 3 mm and then maybe be used, depending other areas of wear, that housing is shot, even if the gouged housing didnt tear up your apex seal, compression would be very mad.

I did some more searching and reading on reusing housings. I've realized the housing is shot, even a slight score near the combustion/compression area means the part is junk. I am still wondering about the rotor, but I'd like more opinions :)

yeah i wouldnt risk it, might as well get new housing to extend the life of your build. just makes sense imo. from what ive been reading, doing it right the first time will save you time and money.
