Can I remove my clutch switch?
 

Ok so when I push the clutch in, it makes an annoying clicking type of noise. I got under there and see that one of the clutch switches is not depressing properly or whatever... it's not closing straight on, it's closing at an angle, which is loading and unloading the spring and making a pretty loud and annoying noise.

There appears to be two switch things for the clutch. One is black and on the firewall, and is depressed as you put the the pedal to the floor. I believe this is the clutch safety switch so you can't turn the car on. I'm not talking about that one.

The other is this white little pushrod thingie I am talking about... it is part of the thread thing you turn to adjust the pedal height. It's the clutch equivalent of the brake light switch. There is a hole in the pedal for this thing to slide through when the clutch is all the way out, but it is rubbing whenever I depress the clutch and make a clicking sound. I've already adjusted the clutch freeplay and pedal height, and that doesn't fix it, nor does any kind of grease or anything.

Can I just cut off that white pushrod thing? What would happen if I do? I looked in the FSM and I think it might be for the cruise control. When the clutch pedal is all the way out, it is sticking out of the hole, then when I push the pedal in it will depress the pushrod and then release as the clutch goes to the floor. I don't want my cruise to stop working, but if taking this switch off means I have to just press the brake to turn it off then I will do it. It is really annoying.

ok well I disconnected the thing just to see what would happen, and of course the car keeps revving when I push the clutch in with the cruise on, and I don't think I can live with that. I guess I'll plug it back in and keep trying to devise something. Maybe there is something else that I didn't think of adjusting.

ok I figured out what happened. There's a little bullshit rubber thing that's supposed to dampen the noise... that pushrod should not be going through the hole at all. My rubber thing broke, and that's why this problem suddenly appeared. I will probably have to buy some rubber at the hardware store and glue it on.

ok for anyone who actually cares, I fixed it.

turns out that the easiest thing to do was to stick 3 layers of duct tape over the hole. Noise gone. I presume this would fix a similar noise from the brake pedal.

How long did this take?

The switch had a little button on top of it that connected the pedal arm. It's broken off and gone now and the plunger part is slipping in the hole in the pedal arm.
Two things you can do:

Get something to fill up that hole and the switch should at least work. I used a plastic sheetrock anchor...Blue IIRC
Or
Replace the switch. I don't think it costs too much.

well i'll drive it around for a while and we'll see how long the duct tape stays on. Then I'll just replace it with more duct tape. Everthing is working fine right now though.

I just duct taped the little button on mine. Works fine. I have no clue what the switch is for... but I've had no adverse affects that I can find.
