Can I get away with priming the side molding?
 

I have a white 88 with black side molding going around the front to the back which Im pretty sure is plastic as compared to being rubber... Has anyone ever tried priming the molding or painting it to a different color? Would priming it white mess up the molding itself? Would the paint peel off or chip away? Thanks

im wondering the same thing. I've got some plastic adhesion promoter, which primes TPOs and other thermoplastics, you use it as a primer and paint over it as you would anything else. Don't know how long it would last tho.

you can do it. you will have to use a self-etching primer which practically fuses into the plastic itself so it doesnt chip off or scratch as easily. after you self-etch prime it then you can paint it and it should last like the rest of your paint on the car. hope this helps

So it would have to be a special primer and not just any regular one?

Like I had rust building on my car so I sanded it off and primed it with whatever outdoor primer spray paint that lasts against weather... That wont work on plastic though?

You have to get a plastic adhesive promotor.

At least I'm pretty sure that's plastic.

Pretty much it etches the plastic so the paint hsa smething to grip to.

you will have to get a special primer. it is a self-etch primer. you could get the spray can of self-etch primer which you would be suprised on how good it works because it is from a can but that runs around $15-$20 i think, which you get from an autobody supply store. then as for paint you can use regular automotive paint which you can get a color match at an autobody shop also.
