Can I add power steering in my 1991 Rx7?
 

Im wondering if I can add power steering into my 1991 Rx7? Which power steering rack do I use? And also which power steering pump do i use, (is it the one with the rpm sensor)? Do the parts have to be from 1989 to 1992? Any comment would be helpful!!:wallbash:

I checked my rack and pinion and it look like a manual rack. So im wondering if I can put one in.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's possible. You need the pump, power steering sensor and the rack at least, dunno what else. Try a forum search. Sometimes there are people who sell it all as a bundle, since a lot of people like to get rid of the power steering and switch to a manual. Not my preference tho, and apparantly not yours.

If it was replaced with a manual rack, then you will need to get an entire P/S setup and swap it back.

Instead of adding power steering how about getting larger wheels and tires. This might sound silly but when I did this to my car the steering became much easier to do. I used to have the factory rotary dial style wheels and tires which looked like they came off a bicycle. Once I put on larger wheels and tires as well it took much less effort to turn the steering wheel plus it looks better too.

that or a bigger steering wheel should make it easier too

If you get wider, better tires, it's going to get worse, not better.

I am the original owner of my 86 RX7 and I made the tire and wheel change after 19 years and it made it much easier then the opposite. I'll repeat myself, it made it much easier. I would think after 19 years of driving the car I would be able to recognize the difference of whether it was easier or not. Throughout the first 19 years it was "always" hard to turn the wheel especially when the car was stationary. Immediately after the change that ceased to be the case and absolutely no other changes were made,none. Other people who had previously remarked on how the car was hard to steer were also those who said the car became much easier to turn at all speeds after the change.

my car is harder to turn when i got wider rims but its a fd not a fc but it should be the same.

My car doesn't have power steering, your's probably does.

A lower profile tire of the same or similar width might be easier to turn because the sidewall will flex less before the tires "break loose" from the pavement. But if you increase width and go to a softer (grippier) tire, it will become harder to turn (although the shorter sidewall might improve it somewhat compared to wide rims of the same diameter).

Also, when going wider it's usually with wheels of less offset, meaning more scrub radius, which will make steering harder. I don't doubt that you find it easier, but it's just not the case that stickier and wider tires should be easier, something else has to be goind on there.

:scared: :scared: From what I hear in 1991 the Rx7 came with optional power steering and that the convertion can be done from manual to power steering. Im wondering if the sensors from the power steering pump would plug right into the cars wire harnness with out splicing. If anyone has power steering parts let me know.

yes the plugs are there. Mazda didn't frigging change the harness unless you go turbo.

just take anything power steering related from the same series and go to town.
