can it be done! turbo my 86 base for 1200 or under?

hi i have a 86 base. Ive put alot of time, love and money into my 7. I really dont want to sell it and get a turbo. I just rebuilt the motor. It has like 6000 on it. I would like to turbo. My question is can i turbo it with right around 1200 to work with. I could probably do the exhaust piping and intercooler piping myself. Otherwise im going to have to pay full price on everything else. I know a guy that makes rx7 manifolds as well so thats not a big deal. thanks,
kevin.

I'm going to say no. I'm turboing my 6port as well, and I have an excel spreadsheet here at work that I'm using to keep track of what I have/don't have.

Here is my list, note that I am planning to (for now) use the N/A transmission. I don't plan on doing any hard launches, so I should be ok for a few months until I swap in a TII transmission and use a modified driveshaft to hook up with the n/a rear.

Please note that there is approx $150 worth of things you can knock off the "purchased items" list - the pedals and the OMP. These are not necessary to the turbo but I plan on doing these at the same time, so I included them. Also, please note that the "Purchased Items" have prices that include my shipping costs. In other words, that is the ammount I paid. You may be able to find parts for a few dollars less, but I doubt you can find them for a drastic difference in price. The "Needed" list does NOT include shipping. Those are prices I have found at one time or another, and they can and will change. For example, the SAFC-II I once found for $175, I can now only find for $219 at the cheapest on ebay. Also, this doesn't include any tools you may need. And I'm sure I've forgotten a part or two.

If you get a JDM it can be done as well with 1200USD. The jdm will run you about a grand, maybe 1200 with shipping, it will come with the tranny ecu and harness. Wire that bitch up, use the NA differential and you only need a couple more parts.
There are only two things you need after this, a TII fuel pump and that custom driveshaft that mazdatrix sells.

To keep it in the 1200 area, you can use the NA tranny and you will not need the driveshaft, with the stock 200hp on the s5 jdm, it should hold up.

I'm assuming he means to turbo his existing 6port, as he mentioned it was just rebuilt.

If you don't mind tearing out the engine currently in the car, go with BlackPlague's post. I would estimate a cost of ~1500 just to be on the safe side, never know what extra little parts/tools you'll need.

I did mine fairly cheap because i had a turbo parts car. Only thing i bought for my n/a was fluids and the oil filter pedestial adapter and SS line for like 100 bucks.

where can u get a jdm s5 engine and transmission with the ecu and harness for 1200? ive been looking for places like this.

sub9lulu 06-17-05 08:40 PM

seriously if you are short on money DONT DO IT

X-JaVeN-X 06-17-05 11:09 PM

go with the jspec...after you know it's in good running condition you can sell your n/a to make some of the money back and put towards whatever else you may need.

Anything is posibly. But legitamently and properly. I would say it is more then likely not going to be done. If you do manage more power to you. I would imagin it would take some time hunting down them kind of deals on parts you need. If you just rebuilt your engin man, don't ditch it. Seriusly it will treat you good for along time, why abanden it?

I would plan you T project. www.1300cc.com and finish it right and not skimp on it. You need a fule controller and injectors on your N/A, this bumps the cost quickly in most circumstances, thus rendering your project quickly past $1,200

So take your time and just do it right, you will be happy in the long run.

well i would like to stay around 1200 lol. I know that price will probably escalate well above my original price, just thought id get some advice from people who have done this. If I could find a Tii,ecu, tranny, harness for 1200 or lower i would do it in a second. I love my na but ive always wanted a tII motor. If anyone knows of a place that is reputable let me know.

if you shop around here and at nopistons (in the classifieds) for long enough, you can get some really amazing deals (be careful though!). that's what i've been doing for a couple of months now to get everything in order for my summer overhaul. the nice thing about it is that, even though you're accomplishing a lot while you're accumulating everything you need, it takes time (waiting for pm's, emails, packages, etc.), all the while allowing you to save up more cash, without it feeling like you're putting your project on hold to do so.

easymmkay240sx 06-19-05 03:02 AM

just buy all the turbo manifolds and injectors, fuel pump, etc...and go
