Can a 89-91 Turbo II beat a 5th or 6th Gen Celica GT-FOUR?
just a curious question, can a Turbo II keep up with or even beat the 1990-1997 Celica AWD Turbo? They are fairly close in specs however the Celica does seem to have an advantage. No this doesn't lead anywhere and i'm not planning to ever race the Celica cause in my small ass hick town that model is unheard of, I was just browsing some specs and noticed they were close so i was curious.

i remember beatin one when i had my fb.....granted my fb was modded a bit and im not sure what was done to his car. If that helps any.....but equally modded i think the rex will come out on top.

I thought the Gt-4 was only made one year, in 1990??
|
Well, the 88-89 All Track Turbos had 190hp/190 lb ft.
The 90-93's had 200hp/143 lb ft. So its basically even, stock for stock, I'd say. You have more torque, but he's got AWD...:) And yes, the GT-4's where only 1990 Models and they where all orange. |
Yes, you should actually walk right away from any GT-4 (stock). Believe it or not, the GT-4 is in GTUs territory if you are comparing two stock cars. The GT-4 AWD seems to suck up a lot of power and the car isnt very light either. Mid fifteen 1/4 mile times stock...a '90 TII should post a mid-high 14 stock.

I know someone that has one and its modded and it is really slow My NA with a race pipe could take it... he's runnin mid 16's

Just to Clarify things, It was my bad in listing the year of the GT-4, They were 4th and 5th Gen in North America, 6th Gen Only in Japan. The 5th Gen Have 200hp/200ft lbs. torque, and they game in a Variety of colors, none of which were orange. I'm not too sure on the details of the 4th Gen but i know it never came in orange either. The 6th Gen had about 250hp, not sure of the torque and it never came in orange either. And yes I'm sure about the stats of the 5th Gen because I have a friend that moved away that owned one, it was red.

I've read that road and track review also but there is now way a GTU's only pulls a 16.7 (of course you have to be the snot out of if like all the NA's). I've read other reviews that put it at about a 15.7 or so stock. They are definitely quicker than the S4's and in mags those managed about a 16.0 (one R&T guy got a 15.8 out of a stock NA S4). I have some book of RX-7 reviews from various car mags that cover all 1st and 2nd gens including the Infini IV :)

(In other areas they did have the ST 205 (235 hp) engine). They either came with the 1.8L I4 (110 hp), or the 2.2L I4 (135 hp). Then they switched to a more powerful 1.8L I4 (140 hp or 180 hp GTS) for 2000 and on... No North American spec All-Trac had 200 lb. ft. of torque. Unless you have the spec proving otherwise. |
90 GT-4. Notice the orange color
:)

they are heavy and slow. 16.x 1/4 stock compared to 15 for the turbo II.
the stoped in 92 or 93 here, those are very very rare. 90 is most common for the newer style. |
evilrotor, notice the picture is very faded and the difference between the orange corner signal, and the red paint on the car. the only orange Celica you'll find was custom painted. If you don't believe me go to www.toyotacelicas.com and ask the people on that message board if it came in orange.

evilrotor, to add more, thank you for repeating exactly what you quoted me saying in a more technical term, you are exactly right, no Celica before 1990 had 200hp because that was the 4th Gen which i never once said had 200Hp, the 5th Gen which was 91-94 did indeed have 200hp and 200ft/lbs of torque, if you don't believe me on this fact, check any shop computer program listing for the specs of the engine, I also believe edmunds.com has the specs listed, not to mension the owners manual also says 200ft/lbs of torque. the 1995 model year saw the dawn of the 6th Gen and the AWD turbo was never released here, but it had 255hp not 235, once again the owners manual will prove that, it was the 5th Gen GT-4 in japan that had the 235hp engine. I lived in japan for 5 years and i went to test drive one, i've seen the manual. It was actually the 180sx there that made me want a 240sx when i got back to canada but there is no contest between the 2, us north americans got hosed on the best versions of our favorite cars. Please don't try to prove me wrong again, not only have i driven all of the Celicas in question, but i also have the factory brocheures from Toyota stating many of the same facts, cause until i drove the 180sx, i ate, slept and breathed the Celica.

I dont see toyota, the benchmark of reliability, raising compression on a turbo powerplant from 8.5:1 to 11:1, if they did that there'd be detonation from hell. Hell their NA powerplants only run 9.5 or so compression.
That said the car overall is slower than a turbo II, but still moddable. The 3SGTE powerplant is one of te strongest bottom ends out there, right beside the toyota I6 supra motor 2jZTE powerplant which we all know to be bulletproof. That pike's peak tacoma truck? The one that last I heard had like 1000hp? Runs a 3SGTE. This is the same motor in a turbo mr2. |
Celica riding on chrome
Hey kevin how bout sporting some pics of your celica????
Depending on how big the mods a celica could keep up but a modded turboII says bye bye |
Even if power to weight of the the GT4 and the TII are dead even, the GT4 is awd, and there's loads of drivetrain loss. TII should in theory take it.
