Camaro RS z28 vs. NA rx7

ok now my friend doesnt just have any ol camaro its a 69 camaro rs z28 rare has it is its also got a 468 in it bored stroked running high compression racing everything from the valves to the crankshaft the engines built i estimate at least 600 hp... it also has a tec 3 racing transmission and drag suspension. with slicks... now has for my car im planning actually me and some other guys including him.. to get my car to beat him in the 1/4 now this is what we plan... large street port. 3mm apex seals light weight flywheel 200 wet shot of nitrous apexi afc. Msd ignition a ignition retard system. aftermarket ecu and full on slicks.. also possibly a turbo 2 drivetrain... and a racing beat head connected to a 3 inch pipe stickin out the side of the car. im curious if anyone thinks this project is gonna take the camaro off the line... the camaro does the 1/8 in maybe 4 5 seconds...:S

SlayerwithaFC3S 03-12-03 01:55 AM

we prolly have about 6 grand all together to drop into my car also i have way more mods to list on my car such as a walbro fuel pump upgraded FPR etc...

T210thAnniv 03-12-03 02:11 AM

"aftermarket ecu" umm i hope you mean HALTEC, cause for that kind of hp you will deff need a stand alone

Scott 89t2 03-12-03 02:16 AM

spend $6000 on a 1000cc bike and you might have a chance....

j200pruf 03-12-03 02:25 AM

Sorry even with a 200 shot of N20 that comaro will stomp the shit out of a N/A. And if he can get it hooked up he will kill you off the line.
I agree with Scott on this one, go get a used Busa and you could kill him :D

dr0x 03-12-03 02:31 AM

Fuck the street port, you better get 3mm seals, a light flywheel, slicks, a t62, a 200 direct port, and a damn bridgeport.

///3oris 03-12-03 02:33 AM

Well, technically, woudln't the N2O take you out of the "N/A" class? :)

Also, you're comparing a car built for track (top end power) vs. a car built for straight line performance (low end torque monster). I think for $6k you'll need to buy a powerful clutch, cuz you WILL have to do 8k rpm drops to kill him, you'll need BIG ASS slicks... and you'll need a whole new drivetrain (look at what happened to vosko's at only ~430 to the wheels?). Oh... and yeah... a BIG ASS shot of N2O... if it doesnt blow your engines to piecees, then you're not pushing enough, and won't beat him... :)

So all in all, I agree with the previous posters... don't race that car or buy a bike :) GSXR600 should be able to take it.. and u can pick up a reletively new one for $6k :).

Never forget, once you start modding for ridiculously big power... you will NEVER stop replacing parts... so if you have a budget of $6k (not much, if you ask me), you better reconsider trying to beat that monster...

Just my oppinion...

Boris

A GSXr wont touch that car. They only trap like mid 10s. Id guess the camaro to probably be in the 9s. A turbo hayabusa will more than destroy it however :) The speedo on those fucking bikes go up faster than my tach in first gear...

///3oris 03-12-03 02:52 AM

OT, but isn't GSXR 1000 faster than a Busa? They run mid-9's from what I remmember. It'd be close to this car :) (What does a Busa run stock?)

MechE00 03-12-03 05:58 AM

It's easy to win that race! All you need is a sizable head start.. ;) Heck, make it a 1/4 mile long autocross course, and those $6000 will really let you paste him.. (a decent chunk of the money going to perf. driving schools)

I must be getting old and crochety.. it makes me cringe to think of people spending money trying to make a nearly unstreetable 1/4 mile car out of an RX-7..

I wonder if I could buy a motorcycle and modify it to carry more people than a full size van... hmm..

argh.. lemme see.. something constructive to say.. umm.. I wonder if you can do a V-8 swap for $6000, or was the point to make a 1.3 liter engine out-torque an apparently decently prepared displacement monster?

skyypilot 03-12-03 07:08 AM

You have no chance dude. You are trying to kill an elephant with a BB gun. Stay within your own species when you race...

Rxmfn7 03-12-03 08:07 AM

I agree whole-heartedly with the V-8 swap idea. A budget of $6k will get you a nice Lt1/T56 combo, nicely installed. Probably have a bit left over for some mods, maybe a cam and some better heads. Youll still want the T2 rear end ,as the N/A one would probably snap instantly with all that torque. With a lightly modded LT1 Id think low 12s. high 11s would be possible, youll probably need a bit more to take the camaro.

600hp and 5's in 8th mile

I highly doubt with only 600hp your buddy is running in the 4-5 second range in the 1/8th mile. My friend runs a super gas car it is a 69 camaro with a 522c.i. bbc built by patterson racing with alcohol injection, it has been dynoed at over 800hp. The car is a full tilt boogie race car with all the best it runs 9.00 in the 1/4 and high 6's in the eigth. A 4-5 second pass is pro-modified territory. Pro mods have around 2500hp and usually run low 4's in the 1/8 and do the 1/4 in low 6's. In my 84 monte carlo I have a 406sbc with right at 550hp, while it is a street car and not a full scale race piece, I run mid 11's in the 1/4 and high 7's in the 1/8. I think if your buddy honestly believes he'll run in the 5's 1/8th mile, you with an extremely light weight, full race, brideported, with a 200hp shot, you would make his jaw drop when you beat him. His car should be somewhere in the 10's. I've seen plenty of 1st gens go faster then that with the same recipe as you. While domestics are my first choice, nothing is better than seeing a rotary engine beating a big block!

Detriuch 03-12-03 10:51 AM

man your not gonna stand a chance with that na if he is running 4 or 5s in the 1/8. you better get your hands on a 1st gen and strip it and put a jpsec 13brew with a huge turbo and alittle nitrous on top of that with some slicks and a ford rear

Ryde _Or_Die 03-12-03 01:13 PM

To have a chance you will have to go bridgeport for sure and a huge shot of N20. PLUS, ditch as must weight as possible. You'll have to get stupid with the weight reduction, like cut away sheet metal, everything. If his car is running 10s even and you want to beat him, you'll need wheelie bars, lol. I don't see this happening.

Ryde _Or_Die 03-12-03 01:15 PM

This might put things into perspective:

Bigretardhead 03-12-03 01:22 PM

I raced a brand new Z28 camero, and lost by about 2 car lengths at about 55mph. this was in my N/A.
is that good?

Ryde _Or_Die 03-12-03 01:45 PM

Well at 75 he should be like 5 car lengths ahead, 95, 8 or 10, 110-15 or so, lol.

Tjive999 03-12-03 01:50 PM

save your money and just accept that you ain't going to beat a nice classic american muscle car that was built to drag.

Rxmfn7 03-12-03 01:51 PM

How am I not suprised that anyone agreed with my v8 swap post....;)

DAN CARWIN 03-12-03 01:52 PM

Dude, the z28 really was NOT racing. lol

A turbo hayabusa has the potential to run 7s...

rotary>piston 03-12-03 04:55 PM

the camaro is designed as a drag car, you'll never beat it in its element. American cars are drag cars. Take him to an Autocross course, then you'll destroy him.
They only way to beat him is get a big assed turbo, or maybe a 3-rotor. Either way, you'll spend a lot more that he will. RX-7's don't have enough torque to be drag cars, especially in N/A form.

j200pruf 03-13-03 01:25 AM

busa's run faster in the 1/4. Just a little bit though. And if you were to throw some slicks and lower it that would one fast bike.
