Calling all Bare Block People!

Im running my engine completely bareblock but I can NOT get the car to start hot. Anyone else have this trouble? What did you do to fix it?

Do you smell fuel when you try to start it???

COsborne 02-10-03 11:08 AM

yes, its flooding...thats why I have a fuel cut switch

SonicRaT 02-10-03 11:18 AM

Well, if that's the case I'd suggest cleaning the injectors ;)

Rotorific 02-10-03 11:20 AM

Ive never had any problems about flooding but then again ive got some good injectors.

hypntyz7 02-10-03 12:03 PM

Vacuum leak? Insuficient premix (if running no OMP)?

pyro_assassin 02-10-03 12:04 PM

i smell gas when i start mine, but it always starts when i do. if theres no gas smell, then theres no start for me. hmmm.....that doesnt sound right now that i think about it

I assume you removed the fuel pressure regulator solenoid, in which case, you need to go put that back in. IIRC, that solenoid drops fuel pressure while hot to prevent problems with hot starts.

I have run many a car, both NA and turbo, with a straight vacuum hose to the FPR and never had a single problem. I would be highly surprised if that were a problem...

i'm bareblock, i just have trouble starting while cold only, straight vac line to FPR also.

actually, because of that solenoid, fuel pressure is max on hot start for 90s because it vents the fuel pressure regulator to the atmosphere (pressure = 0).

check the FSM first, there is a section for hot start and cold start, I was having trouble with could start and realized my 2ndary throttle plates where completly closed, as the should be 15% open....

Silkworm 02-10-03 05:54 PM

hypnty,

my experience is from 86-88 NAs, that's all I can claim expertise in, and according to the 86-88 FSM, 4A-67,checking fuel line pressure, disconnecting the FPR from vacuum should send pressures UP, not down.

I'm at work, and don't have time to research all of this, but that's my understanding of how this works. I could be wrong, or it may be totally different for turbos or S5s.

Quite correct but when its hot you'd want the least preasure possible to inject less fuel, therefore, stop flooding, no? which would mean you'd want the line connected straight to a vacume source.

Either way, I have mine connected straight to a vacume source and don't have any hot flooding probs.

Silkworm 02-10-03 07:48 PM

oh.

hey..

That's a good line of thinking.. I guess I was thinking he had it capped, like I do..

Sorry, nevermind :)

My injectors have supposedly been cleaned... :(

Jahoo88 02-10-03 10:19 PM

i have the same sumptoms on my bare block. Runs like extreme shit, misfiring and all on a cold motor for the first 5 mins of driving. Alomost seems like a blown motor when its really cold. Then its fine.

On hot start i have to use the fuel cut switch or else it wont start.

I have the same mods pretty much but S5 motor, and no SAFC.. and none of the porting.

HKSTurboII 02-10-03 10:33 PM

I would say there might be a hairline split in one of the injectors, or they're leaking through the O rings, or something to that effect! Just saying out of personal experience.

COsborne 02-10-03 10:48 PM

Im getting a lot of feedback related to leaks around the injectors...there's gotta be something to that then

Jahoo88 02-11-03 08:43 AM

It might be injectors... hard to say. If you shut it off with the fuel cut switch, will it hot start with the switch on after? It should if its leaky injectors.

On hot start, it kinda catches for a split second and then dies and doesnt start.

Would leaky injectors explain the shitty running when cold?

COsborne 02-11-03 11:49 PM

nah it wont start if I turn it off with fuel cut and turn fuel on and crank it
