A/C problems
 

I posted previously needing help with a A/C problem. No response! Thanks! Do any of you guys know what a TXV is or for that matter do you know what a A/C is or how it works? If anyone out there knows anything about RX-7's other than how to make them faster I would like to hear from them. I am
trying to obtain a comfortable and reliable car. At 151,000 miles I would say it is reliable, but it is slowing down. It will only do 115 in 4th and I'm only making 26mpg. Comfort is the problem. You need the A/C when it is 105+. Where is the TXV and what is required to get to it and change it out?

Do you know how to download the 89 factory manual at http://www.fc3s.org and look in the a/c section? THANKS!

Where did you hear of this TXV? You seem to be the only one who’s heard of it. Have you considered taking your car to an automotive A/C specialist and getting it serviced?

BTW, a little less attitude will get you friendlier responses and more info. :)

I have heard of a TXV from every automotive supply store in this area and every A/C specialist on the WWW. I presently have one ordered and on it's way. When you have a receiver/drier in the high line you also have a TXV in the high line, which I have recently learned is in the evaporator housing. I am wanting to know what is required to access the TXV and change it out. Some have said you have to remove the entire dash panel but I question this. As far as going to a A/C professional: You must live in or near a city. I have the shop manual for this car and it does not address my problem. Thank you for your response. At least my attitude did get a response.

I might guess that the TXV (never heard it called that) is known as the expansion valve (thermal expansion valve). As for replacing it....in an '87 you can remove the a/c evaporator from underneath the dash on the passenger side. Pretty easy job. I also did not appreciate the way the question was asked.

Wow..This is not generally the way to go about getting AC help... Alot of us are good at AC, and would love to help. If I had seen your post earlier, I would have responded. No need to go attacking other members.

OK, feeling a bit stupid, I should've known this (check my profile)! :dunce:

A TXV is a thermostatic expansion valve, and is what maintains correct vapour pressure in the A/C system. The pic below shows the cooling unit from under the dash; the "expansion valve" (as the manual calls it) is item 4.

This is from the 89 manual, but the earlier models will be similar. Since replacing the TXV will require replacing the refrigerant anyway (the cooling unit must be removed from the car), I'd seriously consider having a pro do all the work. Otherwise download the HVAC chapter of the 89 FSM from www.fc3s.org for reference. The 88 online FSM appears to have no info of the A/C system at all.

No. Its personal and should be taken that way. An expansion valve is an expansion valve and the pdsa knew it. Its just a childs game he's playing. He never was really interested in information about how to replace the expansion valve.

Sorry for the way I went about it but I got my answer. Thanks for all the input. Incidentally, TXV is pretty common terminology in the air conditioning trade and is much easier to say and to write than thermal expansion valve.

Wow. I wish I had an A/C to break. Mazdacity told me that mine was totally dry-rotted from sitting for a year (I'll be getting a second opinion soon, I haven't really looked at it myself)
