A/C compressor front seal leaking
 

I just had the A/C on my 90TII checked today. The sevice guy told me that the front seal on my compressor is leaking and that I only have about 1/4 of a pound of freon in the system b/c of it. The tech recomended changing my whole A/C system. I was wondering if there is a way around that b/c it costs so much. Can I just change the seal myself or should I have someone do it for me? Or should I just get a new compressor? Does any know where I can get a compressor for a good price? Less than $470. By the way I checked the archives and the thread in there doesn't address my problem fully. Any suggestions besides getting rid of the whole system would be really helpful. Thanks.

I think you should have someone do it for you. If you wanted to do it yourself, there is a Sanden site on the internet and it has online the overhaul manuals for your compressor. Also I notice the 89 service manual for the RX-7 has a faily good a/c section, unlike my 87 manual.

Take it off and have a repair a/c repair shop overhaul it and have it back to you in a couple of days. Or do it yourself and have it fixed in a couple of weeks after you line out where the online manual is and where to buy the tools and parts. Just my opinion at the moment. Could change with the weather. Say its winter. Might do it yourself in the winter. No hurry then.

Thanks man. My manual has a good A/C section too. The only problem is that I don't have the tools for the job. Although I can get it out and will probably take it to a A/C repair place. I didn't know there were places like that around.

Sorry, never taken one to anybody. .Didn't mean to imply I had. I've just thought about it. If I did that in FT Worth, I think I'd go to Forbes down on WhiteSettlement road for a start. If that didn't work I'd ask around the auto stores and see if they know where. There just HAS to be shops that repair a/c compressores. I don't think I'm misleading you. Ask around and let your fingers do the walking in the Yellow Pages.

That said, I have downloaded the Sanden manual in the past and ordered the seals from carparts.com. Don't have the manual anymore on disk, like I say got it from the Sanden site with some searching.

Yeah. Take it off and find a place to repair it. Not in that order perhaps. Have fun.

Hmm, well to tell you the truth, 99% of compressor seals will leak refrigerant if it has not been used recentlt, part of the sealing process is oil, and with no run time, no oil gets to the seal, most likely if you charged it up, and used it regularly it would hold its gas..Max

There is stop leak for AC systems for this reason.
try that first.

then hace it sniffed an a couple shops to be sure that there was a leak in the compressor at all.

thats the 1 thing that costs the most and most people cannot argue about it because they have no idea about AC.

I just learned how to do AC repairs.

I can now repair/replace the whole AC system if i so desire.
