Buying an rx7

Hello,
I've been looking into buying an rx7 for awhile now. A friend of mine in college had a 2nd gen, and the thing was sweet. Over the last few weeks, I've been looking into buying one. I found a 88 GXL (but auto) with 90,000 miles. It is in good condition, the guy just wants to get rid of it. He says the engine is blown. I asked him some details about what happened to the engine, and he said the car ran perfectly fine, he just turned it off one day and it hasn't started since. To me it sorta sounds like what happens when the engine get carbon locked, and is supposedly pretty easy to fix, and it can run fine. I can pick probably get the car for under $1000. I was just wondering if you other rotary guys think its worth it.

1000 sounds right if the body is in fairly good condition and the interior as well. You might get really lucky and its just really flooded:)

Avoid the auto at all costs unless you must have one in order for other family members to drive it. Not only is the auto slow, but it is also extremely expensive to repair and replace, and it isn't very easy to convert to a manual.

Carbon lock is pretty rare. It may be flooded, or the air conditioning compressor may have locked up (check the belt).
