Burning Oil

My 88 GXL is burning a little oil think its the seals, Is there anything that i can safely add to maybe condition the seals to keep it running for a bit longer?

MMO is always a good choice. That stuff works wonders.

If you want the smoking to be less, put in 20w50 oil if you haven't already.

There's also some products and reduce smoking, such as HyperLube. I won't promote them or anything since I haven't used them. However, I HEAR they do work.

Arent rotarys supposed to burn oil anyway, i thought it was like 5cc's of oil at 2500 RPM's or something like that

Yea they do burn oil to keep the apex seals lubed. But if you can see it coming out of the exhaust then its more than whats supposed to burn.

ya i've heard everything from 1 QT / 1k miles to 3 QT / 1k miles...
Are you sure its burning it and not leaking? remember they smoke like crazy when you start um cold anyway... especially if you got various mods... and i agree 20W-50 is good to use... it will make you do a lil better... but also check your OMP... mine was just flat broke and putting in about as much oil as gas LoL... maybe not quite... but still... that and your TPS can mess you up... as well as the oil injectors (trace lines from the OMP to find um... its easier if the TB/VDI is off.. but then u need a new gasket)

BlaCkPlaGUE 08-25-04 05:15 PM

Maybe the oil injectors are fucked up? is this a possibility? they're pumping in too much oil?

Define burning oil... how much...

anything less than 1 or 2 quarts for 1k-2k miles is normal and much better than most mid 80's and 90's GM v8s.

Yeah, I was assuming he meant excessively. He seems to have dissapeared though... oh well.

well when i drive the car normal under 5k no smoke everything seems kool, if i punch it and run it hard smokes like nuts out the back usually around 5.5k and cuts off around 7k

its kinda funny with people riding my ass, poof they back off real quick. Its pretty thick smoke too. I switched TPS's still did the same but it didnt start tell i adjusted the TPS and vac resistor.

Again:

Smoke means nothing... smoke can be from coolant, or too much fuel or even a failing cat...

OMP somehow dumping far too much,

or, might be time for a rebuild sometime in the near future...

Are you running premix also?

MrFuzzy 08-26-04 01:24 PM

No premix, the engine has 175k miles on it its not sucking coolent, as far as how much oil well i put a qt in 2 days ago its down past low on the stick might be my stick tho, but theres a big blue cloud =P

Cybaster 08-26-04 01:31 PM

blue, definitely Burning Oil =)

well i have used those "SMOKE BGONE!!" things in my old celica before.... THEY do work (sort of) i heard they BASICALLY (if not fully) make your oil thicker..... but other i've talked to say they help seal up too.......

I never used (want to or hope i will have to) use it in my RX-7, but just sharing that those DO work in a way, and yes, hermit said, use 20w50, that help cause less smoke too (from experience)

WAYNE88N/A 08-26-04 02:08 PM

175K, you need to start planning for a rebuild anyway. At this point your apex seals have about .3 to .4mm of wear left, and your oil control rings aren't exactly flexible anymore...At least she's still running, giving you time to plan ahead a bit :)

MrFuzzy 08-26-04 05:22 PM

Yeah have another engine in my garage just its a lotta work to swap =P
