budget racing seats
 

well i'm building a budget drifter fc/na and what i'm wondering is i have herd alot of peoplehave put jdm R32 gt-r seats in there fc's all they did was modify the slider rails i was told they sit about a few inches below stock so its a good mod if your a tall guy like me i'm 6'2 and i have about 1" of clearance and at the track when i have the helmet on it sucks big time....

so can anyone let me know if they have done this mod before

searched ebay and hey seem to be in the same price range as the Momo Starts. You can make a custom rail and mount it lower than stock.

It seems like it could be a sweet mod. They look similar to a set of Recaros. But probably a lot cheaper ;D

If you want reclineable then youll pay more but it's all about what you want .

hmmm...like even adam at rx-7 specalties said that they should more than likely fit with minor modification of course

I know you're longing at the R32 seats, but check here (http://www.speedwaremotorsports.com/). They have a lot of well known brands.

You're never going to get a couple inches lower unless you recess the floor and bolt a seat with absolutely no padding directly to it. On the stock seats your butt is already fairly close to the floor, and almost any sport seat with sliders will put you up higher. If you want to get lower get a side mount shell type seat with minimal padding and mount it directly to the floor with no sliders.

I disagree. I have after market seats and they are a good bit lower than stock. My dad is 6'7 and can sit in my car. They are a fiberglass shell with thin padding, but they are still very comfortable. They come with brackets that mount to the side, so they are nearly touching the floor. They are also cheap and super light (11 pounds total), but they are no longer made. I think the company is NEX.

f1spec.com just got 2 of the version3 seats and love them so far.

I never said you couldn't get lower, but several inches isn't a realistic expectation for most seats. And most people with sport seats report that there's no gain in headroom, often a loss.

You basically just confirmed what I said, you need a shell seat with little padding and side mount it to get much lower.

One word of caution, the stock seats have been crash tested, I'd bet none of the aftermarket seats, at least the cheap ones, have been crash tested. The FIA ones have, and maybe companies like Recaro do. Know that getting some $100 seats is probably less safe than stock as they might break in a rear end collision. It's worth spending a little extra to get ones that are FIA rated, it's your life after all.

I ran HPDE one day. With a helmet smashed to roof - just a bad distraction when pushing a car around. I'm 6-3 and just OK without the Helmet. Voud to have a lower seat before doing it again. Not willing to spend LARGE hundreds for a seat that will only be used 20 min x 4 a day x 4 to 8 track days and find out I'm still no lower. Very interesting thread. i'm more vexed than ever. Mean while upgrading tires, struts, springs, intake, but the seat problem . . . .

sounds like you just need to get a sledge hammer and pound the roof out a little bit to get the extra space

I have the clubmans, but have yet to bolt them in. I fit comfortably with a waist between 34 and 36. I picked them up local for $320 brand new. I'm planning on mounting it directly to the floor, with a slight lean back.

I have a sun roof, but the opening is not realy in the right place. actually sun roofs usually decrease head room. i just looked at the Corbleau Clubman. looks low, good price, I hit the 36" waist, but without side mount feature - maybe not much gain in head room.

The clubman is a tube frame seat and won't give as much headroom as a shell seat. The FX1 seems like a decent seat, I briefly had a couple FX1 wides, but they were a little too wide for me and the car, the regular ones should fit most people and should fit the car ok, too bad they're not side mount.

I'm 6'3" and it is annoying at the track, I end up having to recline the seat a lot. I'm going to put a higher price on my safety though and expect to spend at least $1500 next year on a couple high quality FIA rated seats, one with helmet wings for me, one without for the passenger. You can never spend too much on safety gear, but you can sure as hell spend too little. Food for thought.

ive got DAD racing seats. reclinable as well. didnt pay much.

A generic bucket seat like the F1 spec seats (which are selling for like 3x what I paid for one directly from them) will give you at least an inch of headroom with Bride FG rails, but you won't get the maximum headroom until you drill and use helicoils to lower the seat's rear mount holes... unless you're using a Bride seat on Bride rails.

OTOH, the FG rails for the FC have a piece of metal that crosses from rail to rail on the back, which totally kills the headroom potential for the seat... you could easily get another 3/4 inch of headroom if it wasn't there, assuming you don't have a wide seat...


If you need enough headroom for a roll cage and you're 5'10 and over, you're going to either need to lose about 3-4 inches of height, or cut out the seat rails and mount it flat on the floor... or get rid of the ceiling trim and have a custom cage welded in thats flush with the roof.

Are there any seats out there made for people with really broad shoulders?
