broken tap in trans x member hole
I got my car almost 2 years ago. After working on the car I noticeed 1 of the 4 transmission x member holes has a broken tap stuck in it. Anyone have any good ideas to fix it?

You can try a very hard drill bit and lots of cutting oil. But taps are harder then just about anything.
Sometimes you can get a punch onto one of the flutes and tap it backwards out of the hole but this won't work if it's rusted in place. Some machine shops have an EDM stud/bolt extractor which can vaporize it. Otherwise, you will need to cut out the captured nut from the car and then just weld in a new one. |
EDM stud extractor hugh? I'll search around for that.
My best idea was to use this special lil hole saw my friend has. It doesnt use a center drill, and comes in sizes like 5/8, 9/16 n stuff. It cuts pretty good. I was thinking of putting ina weld nut(i think that is what they are called) It looks a little like a golfing tee that you can weld in. |
