Brand new stereo, no power. Also, no dome lights.

I just put a new deck in my car, thinking the old sony I'd had for years had finally kicked the bucket. When I removed it, I cut the wires from the sony harness to intentionally have the colors be the flags for the new deck I would install. In other words, the new deck would be installed exactly the same as the last one, which I wired thusly (as far as power is concerned):
Light blue/red stripe- +
Light blue/white stripe- Acc
and obviously the black wire is the ground, which I had going to a point on the body with a self tapper holding down the ring terminal crimped to the ground wire. Solid setup. Somehow, the deck will simply NOT power up. I have yet to check with my multimeter, however it is very unlikely that the brand new deck is the issue and that the wires are in fact providing power.

Anyhoo, I have been plagued by wiring gremlins here and there since day one, and it seems I have no dome light either. Although I have been able to get an extremely weak glow out of the reading lights next to it by fiddling with the push switches. The sun roof gets power just fine.

Sometimes, My climate controls and wipers have no power upon startup, but after the car runs for a minute or two, they spring back to life.

My idiot cluster clock is no longer working... just the clock. It used to come back here and there, but now I havent seen any time displayed in a good while. Everything else works on it, except that the door open and seatbelt lights are always on as long as the car is.

The radio power issue with the deck and the climate control/wipers seem to be unrelated, as when I installed the new deck, both the climate control and wiper systems checked out just fine.

I'm wondering how I would go about wiring up my stereo to a different existing source, or if it would be smarter to create my own new power source, maybe with a relay so that the ignition switch completes the power circuit?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I NEED TUNES!!!!!!!:(

Have you checked your fuses? A blown fuse will do quite a bit with the interior accessories. I'd start there and then check your wiring + connections afterwards

The Red/Black wire is not a ground and if you use this wire you will damage the lighting circuit that it powers. If you did indeed use this wire as the ground then change it and use a genuine ground source.

LTBlue/Red= 12v+
LtBlue/White= +Accessory
LtBlue/Yellow= -power ant trigger
Red/Black=+ Lumination
White=Factory Amp Turn on

On the passenger side of the car, right behind the triangle trim piece in the center console. There should be a bolt going to a metal support frame for the dashboard.

I've grounded my radio to that in both of my Rx7's

Also, check your interior fuse box, mine once tripped on me and i lost all those lights on my 87 gxl

Satch- I am not using that wire. The sony harness has a black wire on it thats going to a solid ground. The wiring diagram for the sony identifies it as the ground for the deck.

W0ppe- I havent thoroughly checked them yet, but at first glance all seems well. I obviously should investigate further.

Robftw- Thanks for the ground location, I'm about to break out the spankin new multimeter and see whats really going on.

dont really need a MM, a test light would tell you what u need to know. check all wires with car off and on, finding constant and ACC. then run through your fuses with the test light instead of taking them all out. touch the test light to the tops of the fuses where they have an exposed piece just for this reason

Riggs 10-21-11 10:51 PM

Barkz- I tested all my fuses with the mm, theyre good.

I tested the blue/red stripe wire. It has power to it if the key is not turned on but for some reason once i tun the key on, it loses power. also, my blue with white stripe wire is not live once i turn the key on. wtf.

thennnnn I tried to see if there is a wire thats hot at the ignition when the key is on. There isnt.

so where the eff am I going to find safe power??? This is getting ridiculous.

The Antenna fuse powers the Black/Green wire w/key to on. Other wires powered w/key to on are the B/W from the Engine fuse, B/Y from the Meter fuse, B/R from the Power window fuse. The Cigar fuse should power the Blue/Black wire w/key to ACC.

thanks!
