brand new inner shift boot still leaks, why?
 

I ordered a new inner boot for my shifter. $30 from the dealership. problem is, I still get oil coming thru the top of that seal. not much of a seal, is it?

I was thinking a coat of silicone around the top would seal it up, but now it's way too oily for anything like that to work.

when I installed this, I slipped the seal over the top of the shifter (with the knob removed, of course) and pushed it down until it popped over the fat part of the shifter at the bottom and onto the ball. is that the proper way to intall this boot? any advice would be nice.

Looks to be installed right...Wonder why oil is coming up out of there... Too much oil in that area?

I guess that's possible. since it's hard to get all the oil OUT, it's hard to measure an amount to pour in... but is there some visual level I want to fill it to?

I cant remember, there is some steps in the FSM and the Haynes that tell you how to fill that area. I think you just add a little bit..

hmm... yeah I kindof topped it off... ehhhh maybe I'll get in there and remove some oil :D

got it: 80-95cc (4.9-5.8 cu-in)

now I have to go buy a syrenge?! dammit all.

yes indeed, it was too much oil. I figured out that 90cc is really close to 3oz. so I sucked out as much oil as I could with a turkey baster and a little syringe, and put back 3oz. the fluid was then a lot lower than it had been before (looked like it had been holding about 5oz, hence the leakage up top). for those looking to eyeball it, 3oz of fluid in that area will just come up to the spring, but not cover it. the oil should not come all the way up to the lower shift bushing, and obviously should not fill the entire area (or it will leak :) )

Not trying to hijack but does anybody have the part number or name for the rubber shift boot right above this? I tryed to order one from the dealer the other day and what came in was the part you are talking about. Might try and replace this part as well.

might want to push it down a little bit and put some silcone sealer on it.

also not a hi-jacking attempt, but if someone put the wrong fluid in there would it hurt that boot? the guy that had the car befor me did alot of things wrong! and now the inner boot is ripped. looks as if it were weak because the wrong fluid was used, and it just split open!

aside from my problem, i believe there is a drain plug on the back of the resivior. just for future reference, though i could be wrong.

you could also use a zip-tie to clamp the top of the boot to the shifter.

Here is what I found, I can verify what I actually used when I get back home because I changed all of these peices early on because when they leak the oil destroys the fake leather boot! :mad:
