Brake question

Im looking to buy an 87 na and when I went to check it out the guy told me it had a problem with the brakes. He said when he goes ~40mph the right side sometimes locks up. He said he took the brakes apart to try and find out what was wrong but he couldn't find anything. Any ideas?

You mean he would just be driving and then it will just OOPS lock up. That sounds like somthing you really don't want to touch, or is it that he will push on the petal and then they lock up, either way it sounds kinda expensinve. And apperently he has taken it appart and found that there is somthing that is going to cost some money, or else, he probably wouldn't be selling it.

could it be a caliper bolt hitting the rotor?

Turbonut 05-08-03 02:04 PM

Could be as simple as a stuck piston in the bore. Could also be a deteriorated brake line (internally). Both will cause the pads to run against the rotor, and when hot and expanding, give an indication of the brakes locking up. How hard could it be to fix? Even if you needed to replace the calipers, pads, rotors, flexible lines...As long as the price of the car right.

This was a question for my friend who doesn't have an account yet on the message board. He was the one who saw the car not me. I belive its an 88 SE for 2grand and has 100000 miles. I will be sure to show him the replies though.

Cory Simpson 05-08-03 03:16 PM

2,000 for an 88 SE I don't think I would go for that, it seems a bit steep. Especially since it is an SE!!

chris1234p 05-08-03 04:00 PM

Yeah, well here in maine we don't have many FC's to choose from :P Although there is another one he is looking at for 4 grand, its nicer though... I think its 89 GTUs with an aftermarket exhaust and some other stuff.

Im lucky I got my 87 TII for 3 grand with 75k miles on it from an old man who took pictures of me with the car when he sold it to me. He said he bought it new and had a passionate love affair with it ever since. I told him I also had a love for them and that I would take very good care of it. Then I went and slapped an intake on it and detonated. =( Within a month it will be back on the road though with a new engine from Kevin.

I seriously think I might be the only person in maine with a TII though. I have only seen about 10 other FCs in my days in maine.

PS... no maine flaming! haha

Yo, this is the guy who asked the question. my friend was mistaken. the brake problem goes to an 87 basic coupe model, asking price is 2500. i also (like he said) was looking at an 88 SE for 4500 with many performance upgrades.

ARE NON TURBO RX-7'S STILL FAST? MORE DEPENDIBLE?

Castrol86GXL 05-08-03 08:38 PM

im pritty sure some other liquid or something of that nature got through the brake lines into the caliper and wore down the bushings to the piston and everytime it gets so hot it exspands and pushes that piston out and there you go basically get a new caliper and bleed your lines and put in new brake fuild after you flush the lines or unless you can rebuild a caliper. unless someone else has a better idea than that. Also things that happen to the brakes cant be fixed by bleeding the lines. Its never that easy

jon1234f 05-08-03 08:41 PM

THIS IS THE GUY WHO ASKED THE QUESTION: THE BRAKES JUST DON'T LOCK UP, IT GRABS ON AND OFF AND HITCHES ON THAT SIDE.

THANKSALOT FOR YOUR EXTREMELY LIFE VITAL INFORMATION!!!!!!!!!!

Castrol86GXL 05-08-03 09:05 PM

. sorry repost

Castrol86GXL 05-08-03 09:06 PM

i say just get a new caliper, brake lines, bleed the lines, check for loose stabilizer bolts and take it to see if the rotor is warped (problem fixed)
