Bolt stock seat directly to floor pan

Hi guys I have a problem i cant drive my car with a helmet, I'm just too tall. As i have track days planned this summer i have to sort out the problem.

Has anyone bolted a seat directly onto the floor plan? That would give me about an inch but i would say the trans tunnel and cross member just behind the seat would be an issue.

Other option is the sunroof. remove runners, head lining and weld roof in. that is not what i really want to do.

I don't think it would be safe to bolt the seat to some 20ga sheetmetal without significant reinforcement. You might be able to safely pull it off if you made something similar to the vert braces.

If you can do without the slider you can drop almost an inch with some custom seat brackets to the stock locations.

Yeah that was the idea, to get rid of runners and bolt seat directly to the fixing locations that the runner would be bolted too.

But yeah I need to Fab up some mount, Just wanted to know if anyone has done it and what problems if any they had.

Thanks Guys

I have trouble with the thought of not having a sliding seat. Aside from the issue of making sure I'd fit, what if anyone else ever drove the car? Now, that hasn't happened yet, but it's likely to happen at least a couple times in the next decade...

FWIW, I have the same problem. If I wear a helmet, I am practically laying down and can's see as well, as I'd like.

How tall are you, im 6 foot. I got recaro seats in mine, dont have a prob at all with a helmet

SpeedOfLife 01-31-08 09:57 PM

The height thing has been done to death. There are 6'5" guys who don't hit their heads, and 6' even guys who do. It's about torso height and how you sit. I'm 6'2" and hit my head even without a helmet, it's especially bad in the morning when I'm slightly taller.

you could run some steel bracing under the floor pan to bolt up to... maybe some 1" strips of 1/4" or maybe even 1/8" steel crisscrossed under it...... wouldn't weigh too much.

if you are going to do this check the track rules. Some tracks may have different rules regarding how seats are bloted in. They are safety equipment.

get a low mounted seat or a racing bucket and take out the padding .

tomoaac 02-01-08 05:54 AM

Yeah to anwser a question i'm 6ft 5.

Trouble with a bucket seat is no recline so could be a lot worse.

The fabbed seat rail presents a problem in the fack that it needs to be a C channel or L shaphed cross-section to maintain the bending stiffness but then it could end up only giving me a few mm, and i need a inch at least for helmet.

Anyone else who drive can us a booster cushon!!

Also it is so true in a morning my head touches roof, in the afternoon i'm fine, i'm taller in the morning!!

If you use some thickish strapping then it shouldn't be bad. Just bend and drill it to fit like the stock rails adjusted to your position. If you want to get serious about getting low then maybe remove the stock attachment points, which are elevated, and bolt it through the floor.

With side mount racing buckets, you can get ones with some recline built in, and the butt can be actually touching the floor, making it as low as possible, and you can recline them by changing the mounting holes.

Yep, non-tall people must use a "midget shim" (not my wording, it's what I've heard it called before).

I need this too, but im not interested in a permanent modification. My trouble is that its in a Vert. Im 6' 1' and wearing a helmet in my vert SUCKS!!!!
