bolt snapped on hot side of turbo HELP
 

hey i am putting my s5 turbo back together and while i did this one of the 6 13mm bolts snapped so its held on by 5 now is it ok to put it back on the car with 5 or should i get the bolt out and put in another one i would think as long as the rest are in good it wouldnt matter as long as its just 1 thats not in any help would be appreciated

Did it snap when you put it on or when you were taking it off? If it was when you were putting it on, was it all of the way down and were other bolts tightened?

I certainly don't know for sure, but it seems to me that the prime importance of the bolts is to ensure that the housing is evenly. If you're going to risk it, ensure that the turbine blades aren't touching the housing when they spin.

Id say since it's already off the car, get the bolt out. you know for peace of mind. Im a really big fan of using left handed drill bits to get out broken bolts, just kinda walks them right back out and your threads are still good.

I'd definitely get it out.

it was when i was putting it back together they were all just about tight i wouldnt know how to get it out and dont want to spend money for someone else to do it does anyone know how to get it out

Where do you get these left handed drill bits at? i have never seen any before.

If you do not put a bolt back in there you will have a massive exhaust leak.

I had one fall out during AutoX and my car sounded like a tractor.

Just go to drill bits on the site and click on multipurpose bits, The one first on the page and then click on "jobber length" then go down to left handed. your gonna need to know the size though. There has to be a place close to you that sells them, just look in the yellow pages under tool supplies, might take a few calls but sombody near you has to have them

alright ill get one since im doing this i will replace all of the screws on it anyone know where to get the 6 13mm screws for the hotside of the turbo also what size left handed drill bit should i order to get out the screw

Take your bolts to a local fastener shop. They will probably be able to find something similar for you. As for where to buy the turbo to manifold gasket, Mazda or Mazdatrix would certainly work. If it's in good shape you don't necessarly need to replace it.

yeah, DON'T take it out yourself. Pay the $30 to have a machine shop do it for you (maybe even less where you live, cos everything is expensive here)... it's just not worth doing it yourself. Hell, most places have a "bolt doctor" that will come to YOU and do it for ya!

Yeah, I have to second that. Unless you can guarantee that you can drill a perfectly straight hole through the middle of the bolt and then tap it, take it to a machine shop. Many of them have EDM bolt removal, and it won't be that expensive. EDM literally vapourizes the bolt out of the hole with electrical discharge. Works wonders. Even if they don't have such a machine, they can still do a much better and more precise job then could ever be done with hand tools.
