Blue Smoke when starting..and a radiator question..

Ok, I have an s4 NA with a fresh rebuild. I have my OMP blocked and run a 1 ounce/gal 2 stroke premix. Also, I have a racing beat header and a stock cat back. Lately I have been getting OCCASIONALLY a puff of blue smoke.. but the other day was a big one. i am just wondering if I need to be concerned and what is causing this..

Also, my radiator busted the other day and my car overheated, I am getting a new radiator in a day or so, I was contemplating getting an aluminum one since I have cooling problems in the summer here in GA but they are all $300+, any good suggestions? I am looking for one ASAP, I can get a new stock rad for 170 or so BTW. Thanks!

i got the corksport one for $299 and it was at my house in 2 days, works better than my old koyo on my other FC

im sure the smoke is due to you premixing

luna_c666 07-28-08 09:48 PM

well it hasn't done this for the first 9 months that I have been driving it, and nothing has changed with the premix..unless it has something to do with the heat?
What does blue smoke indicate? I was under the impression that it may be coolant?
White-oil=burning oil
Black-carbon=burning rich
blue-coolant?
My radiator bursted today and my car overheated for about 3-4 minutes it was over the top line, is this another symptom of the same problem or are the two coincidental?

And how long will you need to overheat your car and how badly before you blow your motor? That would be horrible...there was simply no place to pull over..

blue smoke = oil
white smoke = coolant

as long as you are sure- the whitest white I've ever seen was from an rx7 3rd gen that spit it's trubine shaft down the exhaust an was just dumping oil into the engine.. I just need a second opinion...

i think its coolant did you do the bubble test?

luna_c666 07-28-08 11:41 PM

I will certainly when i put in the new radiator, but I have a strut brace and its just a pain to pop my filler cap..my engine should still be under warranty, but until today it never overheated, and it was puffing blue smoke for a few weeks..it doesn't keep smoking btw, just on the start

dont you have a cap right on top of the rad.? yea i think a lil coolant is leaking in past the seals

luna_c666 07-29-08 12:00 AM

what would cause that? in less than 8000 miles..

A little bit of blue-grey smoke on startup is normal. When the car sits for awhile, a small amount of oil will slowly seep past the oil control rings since the rotors are stationary. The difference between a good control ring and a bad one is if there is oil seepage while the motor is running.

I premix 1.5oz per gallon and I dont smoke on startup one bit. Last time the car sat for 3 months while I was looking for time to fix it, it didnt smoke on startup.
