blown starter?....hope not...

Well I finally have my T-II parts car and it runs, but does not crank. If I push it off, it works, but when I try to crank it, all I hear is the solenoid trying to engage. I took it off and took it apart. A bunch of black dust came out of it (magnet?) then when I thought it was all cleaned up inside, I benchtested it....nothing...well, it did click and try to turn, but to no avail. So my question is: does it sound like I have a bad starter? Ive checked all the other connections like several other posts have said, but they all look good, and due to the fact that it still didnt turn over when hit directly with a battery, Im thinking the worst. But anyhow, thanks

how much of the brushes were left? the black dust is, or rather "was" the brushes.. someone told me an auto transmission starter also works for T2.

If the starter isn't spinning with a direct 12v on it, I'd say it's a pretty sure bet that the starter is toast.

If you need one, I have a NA starter laying in my garage I could send your way fairly cheap.

an n/a starter won't work, i thought it would too so i grabbed one from a wrecker but the solenoid is on the wrong side. an n/a may work for internal parts for rebuilding but an auto transmission starter is the same as a turbo or so i've heard(i believe it because the solenoid is on the correct side).

this does not sound good

Hmmm...well I got my boss to allow me to use the shop on saturdays starting in a few months I hope, so maybe Ill just pull the whole motor and trans and such and while Im rebuilding it, get a new starter. And speaking of rebuilding, is RA the best place to get a rebuild kit, I saw theyre prices were about $400 less than both mazdatrix and racing beat. anyhow, thanks
