Blown or Not Blown?!?!!?
As you may know, 2 Weeks ago I raced a the latest model Supra on the highway pushing 18psi. After the race, I felt a nasty rattle and when I was getting off the highway my car stalled but it was coasting. I turn the car on again and it sounded like shit. Hard to start, Lawnmower sound, popping, backfiring, no low end power, eating gas like crazy. OK I THINK ITS BLOWN I say to myself. I drive the car to my garage and stored it there and I cried all night :(
Today, I had some friends over that know alot about Rx7's and they asked me to turn on my car. The car cranked and fired up fine, idling around 1.5 rpm to 2 rpm, Aaron Cake the RX7 guru thinks that one of my fuel injectors were stuck open and that my 2nd rotor could of just been flooded. The car didn't make the sounds like it did before. Whats up?!?!?! God I hope I don't need an engine rebuild. Anyone go through a similar experience?? Btw I have an 89 Turbo II |
have you checked the compression??
you would be very lucky to not blow it at 18psi with no fuel mods. the car will run at 2000rpm off one rotor, but it won't idle at 750 |
Yeah not yet.
I've been pretty lazy about it. So wait, if its only running on 1 rotor, the idle will be 2000rpm?? Ok Then I think it is blown. But it sounds healthy! |
no with a blown motor it's won't idle, it'll just stall but if you hold the gas so it stays at 2000 or so it will stay running.
|
I think I know what you're talking about. 2 weeks ago I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running when I was at stop lights.
Today, I just fired it up, and it was fine idling around 1500-2000 rpm. Turbo Gauge was bopping all over the place, but it could be just some vaccum problems. btw scott.
I remember you always reply to my problems first. Just wanna say thnx :D Originally posted by Scott 89t2 no with a blown motor it's won't idle, it'll just stall but if you hold the gas so it stays at 2000 or so it will stay running. |
bump
sorry just need opinions from ppl who blown their motors before |

Re: Re: Blown or Not Blown?!?!!?
no i was.
it creeped up from 15psi-18psi. Originally posted by Erik you mean the supra was pushing 18psi right? |
Your motor is gone.
The engine makes better compression when it's cold, thus when you let is cool down overnight it cranked and started fine.  It sounded like crap right after the race due to the engine being hot. Do a compression check to confirm.  The bouncing boost gauge already confirms my suspicions your engine is no good. -Ted |

Greddy upgrade kit bov, front mount intercooler, T-04 turbo, hks intake, some crazy custom exhaust.
Not sure about the fuel injectors and stuff. Originally posted by Erik wow...what mods do you have? |
I was talking with some friends and they asked me questions about the fuel injectors. They think they're stuck open.
when I changed my oil, it smelt like gas. This was the case for the past 4 oil changes. I was wondering about the bouncing boost gauge too but if could be some loose hoses or something or I could be running really rich. I agree that the only way to tell if the motor is dead is a compression test. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and if the motor is dead then its no big deal. what are yo doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO GET IT COMPRESSION TESTED NOW!
get off the comp and do it! lol Action |

haha I tried to today
but mazda was all booked up! Originally posted by AcTion SporT GO GET IT COMPRESSION TESTED NOW! get off the comp and do it! lol Action |
Heres something you can try for a little peace of mind this weeekend. Pull the leading spark plugs AND the EGI fuse. Have someone turn over the engine, and listen for 3 distinct puffs of air from the leading spark plug holes. If you getone disctinct, and 2 that sound different, you have a blown seal. If you hear 3 discinct puffs of air, then start looking for vacuum leaks and such. It would probably be best to only pull 1 leading plug so youre hear only one rotor at a time.

Don't bother with Mazda - go to www.canadiantire.ca and search for "Compression Tester". $42 Canadian.
|
im new at this, but perhaps try the ATF trick? this seems to be the preventative wonder maintenance trick that can restore lost compression...worth a try, whats it going to cost you, $3? and if you dont have an old set of plugs, it sounds like in your case its probably time to replace the current ones anyways. go make a run to autozone ;)
|
ya and then return it when done :D
|
Probably a dumbass question, BUT--
Can ATF restore a blown seal? |
Nope! When a seal goes its gone. Usually ATF will loosen up carbon deposits behind the seals and such. Thus making them move smoother. I have tried this ATF thing and only thing it does for me is start one with a bad apex or a stuck seal. I seriously dont see how it can clean the motor. I got one completetly apart and letting it sit in ATF does nothing...

Stupid question but which wires do you have to remove when doing the ATF trick?
